I just got a Mustang 3 to use mainly as a practice amp and wanted to get the 4 button switch (I hate to be limited to the 2 button). I noticed in the manual it says to plug an expression pedal into the 4 button jack to use with the amp. So can I use the expression pedal with a 4 button switch? I also notice in examples the 2 button is used in conjunction with the 4, isn't the 4 enough? I basically just want to select banks and patches and have an exp pedal and tuner available. I may do some gigs with this amp so the 4 button would be necessary. Thanks!

you can use all 3 pedals together.

I currently (for home use) have the 2-button pedal configured to select presets (UP/DOWN), and the 4-button is configured to select the 3 assigned QA presets. That's been working out well for me.

Would the 4-button switch be enough on its own? Yeah for gigs, I'd just bring the 4-button and leave the 2-button out. But I can get away with only having a few presets available. At home, I just connect both for maximum flexibility.

Note that it is the Fender Mustang EXP-1 expression pedal that is designed to work through the Mustang 4-button footswitch. I don't know if a standard expression pedal like a Morley Wah or Dunlop CryBaby would work through the M4... I think you would have to line them directly through the input or through the effects loop without the M4.

good point Tiger J, I didn't catch that. Everything I stated is in regards to the Fender EXP-1 expression pedal. As far as other brand expression pedals, I have no idea.

Thanks guys, I priced out the 4 button on Amazon ($56ish with shipping) so gonna look into the Fender Exp pedal. I appreciate the input.
I've been carrying around a Fender Deluxe 112, Roland GP100 in a rack and a pedalboard plus my strat, been to a few rehearsals and it's so much better with the Mustang 3, I like this amp.
Thanks again.

ONLY the Fender EXP-1 pedal can be connected to the footswitch socket on the amp. This is because it's a digital control pedal, not an audio-processing pedal, and the amp's footswitch socket is designed to work with the digital signals from that pedal. That is, no sound passes through the pedal, all the pedal does is control a parameter inside the amp's internal DSP.

Exactly correct. You can use standard expression pedals with the Mustang amps, but these are audio-processing pedals so you connect them in-line with the audio signal: either between the guitar and the amp, if you want a "pre-" effect, or in the amp's fx-loop if you want a "post-" effect.

Note you can connect both standard expression pedals, and the Fender EXP-1 pedal, to the amp at the same time.

The 4 button is enough but you have to be on your toes if you play lead. basically running between Clean/Distortion/Clean Lead/Distortion Lead, can be done, and I do it on a regular basis. It is tricky

My settings for the first 6 presets
In the 2nd setting of the pedal

00 = Distortion Lead
01 = Clean
02 = Clean Lead
03 = Distortion
04 = Distortion Lead
05 = Clean
06 = Epic Lead Distortion

(PS If anybody has a better idea for this let me know..still working on the best setup)

I put an EVH Wah between the amp and guitar as well. Have not had time to pick up a expression pedal.

Ive been debating just putting a Boost Pedal in the mix and not have to fumble with all the clicking. Then I would only need 3 live sounds on the amp to fumble with. (I'm just trying to make it as easy and streamlined as possible...with the least amount of gear I guess...)

Only if Fender could add a stand alone boost in the mix, that could be incorporated in the 4 button....ahh..to dream...lol
