My 12 year old son just got a cry baby pedal for Hannukah and can't figure out how to use it with his Mustang 1. Is there a trick to this? What settings is he supposed to use on the amp etc? (I am not knowledeable about guitars or amps so am completely stumped). Any suggestions?

(we know the pedal works because he successfully used it at his guitar lesson, but can't seem to use it at home with his own amp - no sound comes out of the amp)

Thanks y'all!

if it is a standard Crybaby wah...
First set the amp up the way you like it... without the pedal at all!
be sure you have it sounding all to taste.
Then unplug the cable from the amps input and plug it into the crybaby input.
Then take another cable and plug from the crybaby's output into the amps input, where you had the guitar plugged originally.
most pedals have a on/off switch built in under the front of the pedal...
to engage... press the pedal down (sometimes pretty hard) into the toe position.
Or as if pressing on a gas pedal in a car... FLOOR IT!

Thank you so much for responding! I read him those instructions and he swears that is exactly what he has been doing. Any other tricks or things that could go wrong? thanks again!

Hi, Heather--

I may not answer your question, but rest assured, somebody here will be able to help you and your son!

Assuming:

The pedal is a no-frills wah, with just a toe switch to activate;
The cry baby's power supply is operative (either a fresh 9v battery or adapter);
He is getting sound with his guitar plugged straight into the Mustang I;
No other input is occupied which would mute the speaker; in this case, headphones;

The first thing to check is the cables/patch cords. Swap out cables and see if anything changes. If that doesn't solve the problem, I would plug in a pair of headphones and see if any sound was being output through that jack. Even with the pedal switched "off" via the toe switch, you would normally hear some sound, just not the frequency changes when the pedal is moved up and down, so that shouldn't be an issue as far as the "no sound" thing goes.

Mustangs normally work just fine with a wah pedal between the guitar and amp input, so the fix should eventually reveal itself. And I'm sure your son knows this, but just in case: he should have the amp turned "off" anytime he plugs or unplugs anything, rather than just lowering the amp volume. With a solid state amp he can't damage it no matter how often he does this. Although it will cause his amp to revert to the startup presets :D .

Best of luck!
