Hey all, just picked up a Mustang V the other day at Guitar Center. I wasn't going to get one but after playing with it in the store the technokool factor was a little to hard to resist. Mind you it's not the version 2, I don't know if that's a good or bad thing but I have some questions.

First off, while the fact that you can record straight to the pc via USB is pretty awesome. The placement and longevity of the USB port is a bit concerning. You know, with the older amps you could count on them lasting a long time. My old Peavey Bandit 112 still looks and works like the day I bought is some 20 years ago, I seriously doubt this Mustang will be the same. Haven't really looked but is replacing the mini USB port in the event of a problem even possible or is this one of those deals where you replace the whole board and it cost more then half the unit cost so it's not even worth it and turns into a throw away amp?

The other problem I am having, when I play through my speaker cabinet the amp sound pretty good, but if I mic the cab or record through USB I have this digital static I can hear sometime. I think its related to the gain, If I turn the gain all the way down I don't really hear it but when jamming on some heavier stuff I get this static crackle that is just terrible. I would have expected better honestly. I'm kind of upset about this and was really wanting to do some recording with this head but seems like to get a decent sound you have to eq out the mids to try and get rid of some of the noise.

If anyone has some setup tips so I can get this thing sounding clean, and by clean I mean pure sounding, please help me out.

Edit: Bye the way, I still have about 5 days left to return this head, I might just do that in favor of the V2, what saith thee?

For me the price difference between v1 and v2 compared to the additional features in v2 is way too big. But anyway, that's just me ;)
I had the same problem as you regarding clean sound - I suggest selecting one of the clean amp models (mainly the Reverb ones), set Gain at around 2-3 max and volume to about 8. Switch between different cab models to get the clean sound that suits your guitar most :)

Try experimenting with the USB gain and the noise gate. These are most easily adjusted in Fuse under the the Advanced Amp tab.I have had good luck with this with my gain set in the 4-5 range on the 57 Bassman.

Thanks I'll try this. Doesn't really seem to be too much of a problem with the clean, though any gain starts to add some distortion when playing notes a bit hard. The main issue is when playing crunch like on the Far beyond driven setting (45) there is a crackle in the distortion that is way horrible once you've notice it. I've used some other distortion presets that don't seem to do it nearly as bad, if at all, but its really only noticeable when recording the amp with a mic or usb. When playing through the cab in open air it must be masked well enough that you don't hear it.

I'll try what you said, but I've read some post about the V1 having an inferior power amp to the V2 and thus having some fizz in the clean. I haven't noticed this fizz but the crackle/static sound is not going to work for my purposes. Hopefully I can sort it out.

One other thing, I paid 225 for my V1 at Guitar Center, then I say it on Sweetwater for 150. I'm still within my 30 day return period so I'm taking this one back and have ordered the one from SW at the lower price. Hopefully GC won't give me any crap about returning it. I'll complain about the static and say I'm not satisfied. Will save me 75 bucks so for that price I can't $@!&* too much either way.

I'll post back my findings.

Sounds like you're overloading the input. Recording into a computer is tricky, as soon as you overload the input, everything is going to sound like a turd. When recording via USB, try turning down the USB gain. When mic'ing the cab .... depends on how you're going about that, but generally you can lower the recording input level to stop the clipping.

A little more info on your recording setup would help. What mic are you using? What is between the mic and the computer (if anything)? What software are you using to record?

100% true. It needs to be tweaked in (I really do hate that phrase, but I use it a lot). Different presets often require different NG and USB output adjustments, at least in my experience.

Also make sure the Sample and Bit Rate of your record project match that of the Mustang or your USB mic. If there is a sample rate mis-match, you will likely hear clicks and pops even if you do get past the static.

Interesting. I have a lame question though, what's the sampling rate of a Mustang? I would guess it would be 24bit 48khz but could be 16bit for all I know. The thing about the static though, I get it through me headphones as well and it seems to only be within the mid range band width. If I eq out the mids the static is all but eliminated.

I will say this, it does seem to effect certain presets and seems to be gain related at that. I'll admit I haven't played with Fender Fuse enough to see if I can tweak to my liking so I'll have to dig and experiment.

I took back the Mustang I bought from GC today, they kind of wanted me to look around the store and see if I could find something else I wanted. I did that but after about an hour of poking around I just wanted my money back. Refunded me $234, that was including tax, and the one I got online was $149.99 out the door so to speak. That saved me a whole $84. If anyone wants a V1 the price if freaking unbeatable right now. It's actually sort of ridiculously low, though, if you think about it, you can get laptops right now for about $250 to $300. You know some poor Chinese worker is busting their hump for 3 dollars a day putting these things together. I feel almost ashamed. I would almost be tempted to buy a second one in case the first one craps out and I might just do that. You can get 2 V1 Mustangs for the price of 1 V2.

The other thing I'd like to know is, are the V1s inferior to the V2s? I'm not taking about the presets and amp models crap, I mean the DSP and power amp sections. Anyone having great success with a V1? Anyone upgrade and find a world of difference in the V2?

Are the headphones plugged into the computer or the amplifier?

Not likely that its a record problem then. Rule of thumb is you always want to monitor your recorder but if you are monitoring the source and still hearing it then there is a different issue. See how it goes with the new amp when you get it

Keep in mind that you purchased the V1, not the V2. There's plenty of documentation about these issues with the V1 amps. I would return and get the V2. I did and it was the best thing I could have done.
