Hi!

I bought Mustang™ MINI about a month ago and am having this problem.

Before anything, I love this amp so much that it not only fits so well in my tiny apartment but still sounds great even at such low watt, along with many awesome features(and also seems just right for my guitar playing skills :P ).

However, I've connected this amp to a computer(for using Fuse and recording purpose) via USB port ever since the first testing that I did right after opening the box, and yesterday, for the first time, I disconnected the USB from the amp and somehow I hear this noise coming out from the amp speaker.

There's no change in tone or volume but just this annoying noise is added to the sound.
I usually use the built in speaker for monitoring during recording(although it sounds bit different than how it's recorded) and never heard this noise before.

When I plug USB back on, noise just disappears, but when I plug it out, it comes back.
I first thought that maybe the noise gate works only with Fuse connection but it does this even with the computer turned off.

Although I don't actually remember this noise at my first testing(it was few minutes of testing without USB connection) but somehow I started to think that USB port works as some type of ground(yes, it's a very wild guess...).

I'm somehow very stressed that it has only been a month and never left my room, and I find this right when I was planning to take this outside for the first time..

I'm really hoping I can get some support to fix this problems since I don't really feel like changing to different amp since I really like this amp

Please help and thanks for reading this.

Is the computer you connect it to a laptop or a desktop?
A desktop PC would have a connection through the 3rd wire AC house ground. A laptop would likely by isolated from that. I think there is a ground connected wire in the USB cable.

So, my initial thought on your issue might be that of grounding. Why it changed from before when you didn't have the issue I don't know.

Also, grounding issues are usually more of a 60Hz buzz. Yours sounds different as you describe it.

I think you can run the Mustang Mini on batteries? Do you get the buzz if you use batteries rather than mains power?

Also, does the Mustang Mini have an earth/ground connection? That is, is there a three-pin connection to your wall socket, and does the cable going into the Mini have three pins? Is there continuity on all three pins from end-to-end of the cable? Does your wall socket actually have a fully-working earth connection to the house wiring?

If your computer is a laptop (so that you can run it on batteries rather than mains power): if you connect the USV, does it make any difference to the noise whether the laptop is connected to the mains, or running on battery power? When the computer (whether it be desktop or laptop) is connected to the mains, is that a full three-pin connection with earth?

I wish I had read this page yesterday.

I bought a Mustang 1 mid this year. Because of work commitments it hardly gets used, but when it does, I really enjoy it.
Without changing anything, - Guitar, leads, place of practice, the amp has started to hum/buzz since downloading the updated firm ware.
For the first time yesterday I had an opportunity to connect the amp to my laptop to "try out" Fender Fuse. I got a prompt to update Firmware. Part way through the updating, the Amp started buzzing and then mimicked the reverb setting on the amp. Then my laptop gave me a message to say the download was unsuccessful so I tried again, and presently I couldn't say whether the second attempt was successful or not. I do know my amp now buzzes. The noise increases in direct proportion to the volume control settings.
I have noticed that the buzzing disappears when I touch anything metallic between the amp and the guitar - ie machine heads, bridge, strings, metal casing around the guitar leads.
Help. I havent had my use out of this amp to consider another one., anyway my wife would kill me.
has anyone any ideas on what is causing this and how to rectify it?

Geoff

Oh, By the way, I tired returning the Amp to the factory settings, and whilst the situation improved, the buzzing is still there.

Tuan Meda - this sounds entirely unrelated to the firmware update. It might be related to having a USB lead connected to your amp. And possibly to having moved the amp to a different power outlet / wall socket (if you had to move it to put it nearer to your computer so the USB lead would reach).

If you unplug the USB lead, and connect the amp to the original wall socket (if indeed you had moved it), does that change anything?

Also if you've unplugged the guitar lead, or knocked it, etc, then that might have a bad connection, or even be damaged internally. Can you try a different lead? Does the amp still make the noise if you completely unplug the guitar lead from the amp?

To Asswipe
its connected to my desktop computer and as Tuan Muda stated, it turned out it wasnt just about the usb port but every metallic parts were related. Thanks for your reply. I first thought it was 60hz because i was using 220v -> 110v transformer in the same room but it wasnt as you said.

To Scott-uk
This amp is powerd by 12v dc adaptor thus ground is not available. Ive also tried many different sockets in different locations (even on different regions) and tried removing any kind of electronics which is capable of noisemaking (computer, transformer, router, refridgerator....) and it didnt help at all. Ive also checked evey cable related to the amp about its connectivity with my multimeter, and no problem was spotted.
However, i've never tried it working on batteries so i should definitely try that. Thanks.

To Tuan Muda
I think you are having exactly same problem as i do. I also updated the firmware (althought im not sure it has anything to do with this) and my buzz also decreases when i touch any metallic parts. It even decreases when i contact usb port with a steel chopstic making small static noise at the instance of touching. I wonder if you have found the answer to your problem. I still cant understand how firmware update can cause such happening but it somehow turned very resonable since you say that you experienced it. I really hope you found the solution. Thanks for your reply anyways :)

Do you have any metal plates in your head, or metal body parts? :|

j/k, did you try reaching out to Fender support via phone? this might take a long time to diagnose here on the forum.

Hi koostomize,

Firstly, thanks to scott-uk for his ongoing efforts to assist Fender® Consumers. I think that it may be helpful if you contact us directly via email. Please clarify for us what region you are in (geographically), and what gear that you have connected, including power transformer, computer and the amp itself. Also, are you powering the amp with the included power supply or batteries?

Once we can get this information, we should be able to offer some additional assistance. Also, as a general rule, the performance of the amp can be affected as the batteries are draining down. Typical battery life with a fresh set of good quality batteries is about 12-15 hours under normal use. Thanks.

Best Regards,

Haha! maybe i was the 'ironman' all along
Fyi, human body is also a (poor) conductor(trust me, im an engineer :o )
I did thought about contacting fender support, but never had a chance since im living in South Korea and actually bought the amp in Japan. Since i gave up on that, somehow i never got to think of 'via e-mail' method(such stupidity :?... ). So thanks for reminding that fender had a customer support so i could think again. I should be getting started ( writing in english is damn hard for me :( )

I have been following your thread for a while. I have had noise problems in the past as I use the Mustang floor.....One thing you mentioned was checking your cables and continuity.

As I have found in the past ...continuity can check out and you still might have a bad cable.

If the shielding in the cable has broken down......your cable would still work but could pick up outside noise. IE RF

Try changing your cables....do it one at a time

Good cables can be expensive ....but cheap cables can cause you grief....I am guilty of using less expensive cables and sometimes get hum.....changing your cables could be the answer.

Just my 2 cents
