After reading the gazillionth message about phones-that-sound-bad-with-mustangs I decided to do a quick test:

-connected the Mustang3 FX-send to one of my mixer inputs (this is my mixer model http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/Q802USB.aspx)
-connected my cheapo Panasonic phones to the phones out of the mixer (this is my phones model http://reviews.cnet.com/headphones/pana ... 05506.html)
-played with the 3 knob parametric EQ on the mixer channel until I obtained over the phones the same thing I get from the mustang speaker (pretty easy when using the fx-send as you can have both outputs on at the same time)

this is the best EQ setup I was able to get:
-high (12khz) = -15 dB
-mid (2,5 khz) = +6 dB
-low (80 hz) = +1,5 dB

overal the result was fantastic, I still get a pinch too much of treble around 6khz I guess, but can't do much about it.
I will probably get one of those cheap Behringer eq pedals for 25$ (with 7 sliders) to make this a permanent setup, but could use as is.

As a suggestion to Fender, you could include this kind of eq voicing as an option on the phones out for upcoming products. Will cost 2 bucks per amp to implement and will solve one of the main complaints about the mustang series.

after my last post testing I did some extra testing and discovered several new things I did not know about the mustang:

-I tried the same experiment but using the phones out instead of the fx-send. To my surprise, the phones out includes already a different voicing from the fx-send. the phones out is closer to the speaker sound than what you get from the fx-send. So in other words Fender already included some sort of simulated speaker voicing on the phones out (as I requested in my previous post, thank you Fender :)
-the other thing I discovered is that, as soon as anything is connected to the phones out, the voicing on the fx-send changes too! In other words, when you connect anything to the phones output the fx-send starts sounding identical to the phones output.

now again, with my mixer and phones, this is the adjustment I was able to come up to make the phones output closer to what I hear directly from the speaker:

-high (12khz) = -7 dB
-mid (2,5 khz) = +3 dB
-low (80 hz) = 0 dB

this will surelly vary from one headphones set to the next, particularly if you use dj-extra-bass stuff.

Interesting tests. Thanks for sharing

I for one have no complaints with the headphone out. In fact, a lot of my uploaded presets are created using headphones. I'm careful not to goose any EQ too much if any while creating and double and tripple check without phones at a respectable volume prior to uploading and I've found that if the preset sounds good without phones it always sounds great with my headphones on.

Its a speaker moving air without the headphones so its of course not going to be exact. Just need to find the happy medium and work with it. At least that's how I see it

Cheers

Just using decent headphones works for me. The headphone stages in most amps is pretty basic. The Mustangs are better than most because of the stereo emulation.

I use a pair of SHP2500 from Philips (15€). I shape all the preset with the headphones (As suggested by Ola Englud for any modeling system) and the presets sounds always good on the speaker. As stated before the result change as the speaker volume change...

I would like to upgrade to a pair of better headphones, tested some AKG recently and basses where way too boomy. Still searching for something that does not cost as much as the amp and sounds better than my cheapy ones!

Koss KSC75 are excellent clip ons that are silly cheap, and sound very good. The full size equivalent is their PortaPro.
