The other day I was thinking about expanding my amplifier. I had a mustang IV at the time and I wasn't quite sure if I could do anything more with it. That day I took a trip to Guitar's Etc. to see if they could answer my questions. While talking to the owner, Todd, about guitar cabinets, he mentions that Fender sells the Mustang V cabinet without the head. I asked him if I could hook that up with my Mustang IV as the head. He isn't quite sure so he goes ahead and looks up the specs of the IV. He assured me that with the AUX, Phones, USB and FX outputs that there would be a way for it to work. Now a week and 300 dollars later I'm sitting in my bed room, guitar cables laying all over the floor, trying to figure out how this might work. I can't get any sound to the V cabinet.

Is it possible for my Mustang IV to be the head of the V cabinet?
Does Todd have any idea what he is talking about? At all?

Thank you for your help.

There are a couple members of this forum more technically advanced than me, but I am certain all of the suggestions from the guy in the shop will not work: none of those "amp outs" are pushing the wattage to drive four speakers.

You should be able to run to the new speakers from the speaker lines going to the 2x12's of the orginal cabinet. Will take some wire and soldering.

Check out www.triodeamplification.com. They have some wiring diagrams but tread very carefully. Matching ohms and parallel versus series is important. Do it wrong and you can cause a lot of damage. You need to be particularly careful as this is a stereo amp and the speaker cab is stereo as well.

I kinda wonder how these additional speakers will effact the cabinet models in Fuse.

I strongly suggest either returning the 4x12 cab or selling your Mustang IV and getting a Mustang V V2 head (or a used Mustang V head.)

Bingo. This seems to be the 'point' of the Mustang series of amps - to give the user the ability to buy only what they really need in an amp. Switch the IV for a V and you've got what you need.

The only way that comes to mind to use an extension cab with your MIV would be to add a power amplifier and use effects send  power amp  cabinet.

I've connected the Mustang V cabinet from the IV Combo. The V cabinet accepts 8 ohms when using both inputs. The IV requires 8 ohms to both outputs. So, no problems there. Of course I wanted sound only from the cabinet, not the combo and the cabinet simultaneously. I'm sure simultaneous sound is possible but would require some thought on the re-wiring. The speakers in the cab are 4x 16ohm and the ones in the combo are 2x 8ohm.

Several months ago I configured routing to the cab as a proof of concept. I didnt wire it for a permanent connection, I only intended to test for a few hours. Sounded great. I was trying to see the difference comparing the Rocket 50's to the Seventy 80s but could not immediately tell.

In the future I'm going to configure some switched jacks on the combo so all I'll have to do is hookup the speaker cables!

Last night I added casters to the Mustang IV combo. I used the Ernie Ball set on Amazon.

Curious: Did installing the casters having any affect on the cabinet model tones? I have a surplus set of kick back legs, but a bit hesitant to install them on my MIV.

Thanks!

Yes. It sounded a bit brighter, with less bass. Based on what I researched before hand I expected this. So, I did not remove the existing rubber feet. Instead I attached the casters a little further inside. That way I can pop them out and still have it set on the floor.

I thought about doing this for about a year. No regrets here.

I will try installing my kickback legs if I get an hour this week "with nothing else to do.". I like the look of an amp with the legs deployd and if it screws up my cabinet models, I can just keep the amp flat on the floor.

the thing to remember if you are going to wire the cab into the mix, if you wire the cab in parallel with the existing speakers in the mustang IV your load will drop to 4ohms which is unsafe for the amp. you can either wire them in series which will bring the load on each channel to 16 ohms it will work but you will have less output, or you would need to disconnect the stock speakers and run the wires to 2 1/4" jacks and connect those to the cabinet at 8ohms per channel, you definitely do not want to drop your impeadance to 4 ohms as it could damage the amp, I would disconnect the stock speakers and connect the leads to the cabinet, the mustang IV definitely has enough power to rock that cabinet, just be sure to be mindful of the impeadance

I have a mustang 3&4 Today there was a Mustang V 4/12 cabinet on CL 100.00. I called and now own it. Perfect condition. I did not have a head but I saw sweetwater was mustang V heads for 150.00 with the 4 button switch. There on ebay not the new version but at 150.00 I am ok with it. I called sweetwater and wanted the speaker cables. I was told the cables are not just 1/4 guitar cables larger wire. Cables 10.00 each I got two to try the stereo. I am wondering what cables fender recommends for connection the head to the speaker cab. I have a couple of days to wait for shipping.

When I bought my Mustang V head new (v.1), it came with two speaker cables with red 90-degree ends. They're fine, but I bought two thicker, heavier speaker cables to use instead.

Man, I want a v.2 head...
