Hi all

I have read a few topics about headphones in this forum but I still have some questions.

I own some old Philips headphones which sound great on my Line6 pocket pod for both clean and distorted / high gain settings. However when I plug them into my Mustang III or Mustang floor, they sound 'Ok' though not perfect for the clean presets but horrible for the distorted sounds. I first thought I will buy another pair of headphones (cheap or more expensive). But when I read the topic related to this I doubt if I should spend effort on that. Discussions on this forum where about prefered input impedance (32 ohm) etcetera.

I am not looking for a perfect sound (although this would be great offcourse), but who can help me?
Any advice which headones are Ok for clean and drive/dsyorted/high gain sounds?
Preferable not the most expensive ones......

I use headphones at night when I want jam when I get home from work and the kids are asleep. I use Sennheisers and I've been pleased with the results. You just have to be careful NOT to EQ based on what you hear in the cans as I figured out the hard way. Presets would sound great in the cans then shite without. Once I reset my amp and started from scratch I was much happier.

The Sennheiser HD280s are a bit pricey but are excellent cans

I don't play super high gain stuff. Occasionally putz around on Maiden tunes but for the most part I like to play classic rock.

Hope that helps

Well.... that would suggest that I also could tweak the presets a little with my old headphones.

I am searching for a solution that I can plugin my headphones without tweaking presets and that the sound might not be perfect or exactly the same but at least enjoyable also for distorted settings or settings with effects. Why is the headphone I own now perfect on the line6 pocket pod? So it is related to the headphone output of the Mustang amp itself....

You can use whatever headphones you like. I was just answering your question from your original post which was asking for “advice on what headphones would be Ok for…” to which I gave you an example of what I use and with good results along with a gotcha to be aware of. There have been a few exhausting discussions of the finer points of using headphones with this amp so you might find a lot of useful info in some of those discussions but the consensus seems to be that the Headphone out on the mustang is voiced differently so the use of headphones might not be desired based on what you are hoping for and what type of headphones you are using. I’ve never used any Line6 products save for their first Amp Ax2-212 ca 1998 so can’t really comment on what or why the differing results are but the Sennheisers have treated me good with the Mustang amp (again provided I don’t tweak too much EQ-wise), a Boss GT6 and also using it to check mixes done in a Protools Mix Room at work on some tunes a couple of Coworkers and I were recording for fun a while back.

most headphones are voiced to boost bass and ultra-high frequencies, which is exactly the contrary of what you want on a guitar amp :)

as a result, your tone will get more boomy and scratchy over phones, which is awful pretty much all the time. The mustangs could use a EQ setting for the phones out (next version ?) but in the meantime, an easy fix would be to buy an inexpensive EQ pedal and put it between your amp phones aout and your phones. something like this should do the job for 20$

Still 2 questions remaining:

1. are there no headphones on the market that could do this job and which have a more flat response i.s.o boosting bass and ultra high frequencies?

2. Why can line6 succeed with their ouput to the headphones?

Sure there are more even response headphones. On the less expensive end there is the Audio-Technica ATH-m30 and ATH-M50, both of which claim to give I am sure others could provide suggestions

Today I tried Beyerdynamic DT-770 headphones in a guitar shop and based on the discussions in this forum I did not expect much.... but I was amazingly surprised. THe sound was much much better to be honest. I did not buy it yet...but I might do it.

When I tried to google I see that different types exist so I am not sure which type I tested and which fits best...(80Ohm, 250 Ohm...?)

So a little more investigation to be done (maybe other branches as well).
