Hi all,

First a tl;dr - I need an apartment friendly amp that sounds great at low volume, great cleans, and won't clip with multiple effects. An effects loop is a plus for this alone. Does this fit the bill? Details below...

I was recently turned on to the Mustang 3 after realizing my THR10C isn't cutting it. I am fairly limited to digital modelers because I live in an apartment and want to really get a nice sound at low volume. My THR10C does this in spades - I hear things in my guitar I never heard on a low volume tube amp.

That being said, I run a lot of pedals at the front end of it and it can't keep up. I was hoping someone could chime in on the Mustang 3 (since it has an effects loop) to see if it will suit me. Ideally, I want great chimey cleans to run multiple delays, mods, reverbs, etc. through at low and high volume. It would be great if it can take my Wampler Pinnacle too! Primarily I want it to be a clean base, but I am sure I will play with the other amp models just for fun, but it has to get clean right and handle a heavy amount of effects.

Below is my pedal chain. Any idea if the amp will clip, even using the effects loop? I usually have at least 2 delays, 2 reverbs, a POG and compressor on when writing music.

DynaComp -> POG2 -> Phase90 -> Wampler Pinnacle -> Volume -> Carbon Copy -> M9 -> Hall of Fame -> Looper

My thanks!

Pedals works really well with the Mustang EXCEPT distortion-pedals, overdrives works though but I think the main problem with distiortion-pedals is that they drive the input too hot.

The looper is good, it can be used in TWO different modes for different routing. My AMT B-1 preamp-pedal worked better in the input of the mustang though (it have REALLY hot output and is supposed to be connected right to the Poweramp or into the fx-loop of tube-amp), if distortions and stuff doesnt work good you can test it with the Studio Preamp (amp model withing Mustang). I find the Studio Preamp really good, gave some more warmth to the AMT B-1 and the bass, mid and treb gives an extra EQ option and the gain and cab-modelling gives even more options which made my B-1 much more versaitle.

The mustang have a lot of pedal-emulations too, but I also prefer real pedals (and they are probably better, while the fender-pedal-emus are "good enough", the fender spring-reverb-emus are really good though)

Thanks Hwasser.

I do want to use my Wampler Pinnacle, but also recognize I might be able to get to Van Halen territory with the amp itself, so that's not an issue.

Good to know this thing takes pedals well in the effects loop. My main concern now is the compressor and POG2 at the front end. I only saw one post on this forum saying that the POG2 distorted the amp, but I would love to know more, as I don't want to purchase and then find this out later (I need to sell my other amp first!).

Can anyone else chime in here?

Thanks!

I have a Fulltone OCD clone that I absolutely LOVE with this amp and it cost me 30 bucks. I bought a RAT2 that I love as well. Both sound similar at lower gain but I have the RAT set at higher gain to use as a lead sound and it works swimmingly as well. The OCD clone I think has a more full and natural tone to it though. I’ve tried two Fuzz pedals, a silicon fuzz face that I returned for the RAT. Perhaps it was its lack of tone control but I just couldn’t get rid of the flabby low end without completely changing the settings on my presets so it was hard to make it work between different amp models. The Muff clone I have works really nice but its LOUD so I’m forced to save that for special occasions… LOL. The RAT gets me my Fuzzy Muffy sounds at lower volume and I’m happy. The OCD clone doesn’t seem to give a crap what amp model I use so if you’re looking for a good OD I’d look into the OCD and OCD clone type pedals. I have not tried any Time based/modulation effects other than my old DOD Delay but I’m happy with what’s on the mustang so haven’t had the urge. Might pick up a MXR phase though eventually.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tip. If I pick up the amp, I will see how the onboard overdrive us, but I do want to pick up a Joyo Ultimate Drive (which I think you're referring to). I had a Cool Cat v1 for my Egnater Tweaker and it was too harsh. I do like the demos of the Ultimate Drive.

If an OD isn't clipping the amp, I don't see how a POG with just a lower and upper octave (not full blast) will hurt. Now to muster up some cash and pick one of these up...

Matt

Yes I have the Ultimate Drive and it pairs beautifully with this amp. Stacks great with the Mustangs ODs as well. I have the mustang II so having the external OD really comes in handy both for dirtying the clean presets and pushing the driven ones harder. I've had Zero clipping issues with that and the Rat.

Same here. I have an actual OCD that works really well with my v1 MIII. Currently, I'm running it into an MXR '78 distortion ( using it to kick the dist in the nuts). Both pedals sound great on their own, but together, they're just sick! No input clipping at all.

I have also used quite a few time based and modulation fx with it. Some experimenting is necessary to get the best from all of them. The TC chorus and delay especially prefer to run at line level, in the loop. A Boss Flanger sounded great into the front. I've also used a Phase 90, a Dyna Comp, a carbon Copy, a Boss Tremolo, EHX Small Clone, MXR Micro chorus and Micro Flanger ( both analog pedals)and a TC Reverb. all worked just fine. Also, I have not had any trouble stacking real pedals with the Mustang's own effects- they combined just fine!

I can't help you with the POG question though. Octavers and auto wahs, just aren't my thing, and I don't own any.
