I'm mostly a funk guy so I'm not very familiar with high gain tones. My band is covering Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive" and I'm playing lead (pinch harmonics and all.) I'm close, but still not quite there when it comes to the combo of high gain and clarity of the tone. Basically I'm looking for something high gain that can really squeal, but not too noisy. I'll be playing my SG Standard with 490/498 combo (my hottest pickups.)

I'm using a mustang floor into the front of the clean channel on a Bugera V22, so I'll definitely need to use Amp modeling on this one (most of the time I just use studio pre-amp.)

Right now I have the following in my preset, keep in mind I don't really know much about amp settings/EQ:

Amp - American 90s with gain all the way up. Tone settings are scooped mids, with presence all the way up. Sag is set to lowest setting and bias is set to highest setting. Cabinet is 4x12V. Noise gate is set to 'super' but there's still a lot of noise in the signal.

Stomp boxes:
Overdrive with gain set to highest setting. tone settings are low at 0, mid at 50%, high at 100%

Triangle chorus with most settings pretty low (I don't know much about chorus pedals)

Small hall reverb set just enough to give some depth

Delay Mono set just enough for a slight slap-back

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Howdy... K... too much gain. That's what's mushing up the signal. Back that down some on both the amp and the stomp. High 8's area... that will clean it up and leave plenty of sustain and crunch factor.
Triangle Chorus... Hmmmmm... Personally would ditch that for the Simple Comp on low or medium. Don't push the Verb past apprx. 2 oclock in level-ville... that will also mush up the signal.
Try it out :)

Thanks, I'll cut back on the gain and check my reverb settings. I can't do overdrive and compressor at the same time (is that possible on the V2 mustangs? If so, I hope they add that to a firmware update for the floor.) So just ditch the chorus then?

Try it. If you like the chorus more than compression can keep it. I would set the chorus level fairly low.

Wanted Dead or Alive? Bon Jovi? Yeah, I wouldn't be using the Mesa amp model. I'd use the JCM800. That's "British '80s" to you. Change the cab to 4x12V if you plan to scoop out some of the mids...or you can go with 4x12M if you plan to BOOST the mids. You'll get more treble bite out of the amp with 4x12M. Another thing to consider...turn down the "Master Volume" on the amp model (It's the last setting on Page 2 of the amp settings). More MV will sap your treble.

Also, don't forget to make sure your guitar is set up right. The 498T is a somewhat temperamental pickup. I have one in my Gibson Les Paul Custom. Check the pickup height. Lowering it can clear up some mud sometimes.

Try my JCM800 preset I use on my Mustang II v.1 in the Amber-D position.

Amp: [British '80s] Marshall JCM800
Cabinet: 4x12M
- NUMBERS ARE TAKEN FROM FUSE -
Master Volume: 8
Gain: 5
Volume: (set for balance)
Treble: 7.4
Middle: 7
Bass: 8
Presence: 7

Then add your effects as needed.

Thanks for the great tips!

I definitely might try lowering my 498t. I had the SG set up at a shop here in town, but I'm starting to have less and less confidence in their abilities to set up a guitar (several times, I've gotten guitars back with the strings touching the back edge of the tune-o-matic bridge, among other issues.) They set the pickups so the 498t is almost touching the strings and the 490r is almost as low as the pickup rings.

I'll give the JCM a shot, wasn't sure if they would have used Mesas or Marshalls. As I said, I'm more familiar with funk.

Thanks again!

It's a major drag that you can't have a compressor and an OD on the same preset. Lately I've been having great luck adding a post gain comp and having my presets really come to life. I have an external OCD clone that works great but I'd love to be able to use the Greenbox with some of them too.

I'd be very interested in how your preset turns out. I do believe Sambora was a Marshall guy back then. Not sure now. But that is a great album and great player

Please fender, free the compressor from being locked to the stomp box category
