Open back helps get rid of that boxiness. It gives your sound a more 3-D feel. I will only use open back combos for just that reason.

There's an old thread on TDPRI where someone took the back off his MII and says it improves it. I think he changed speaker too..

re flat freq response speakers : there's a thread here with pictures of the freq curves, started by Ffxihealer ( I think) where he looks at that in detail - way back near May of this year.

The Weirdness, Mustang IV v1 style:

This is almost as weird as the messed up woman about whom it is written.

(The ugly clipping at certain parts is from the camera (was too loud for the gain setting on the recorder), not the amp.)

I'm so tempted to do this but i know as soon as i void the warranty, i'll need it. i guess if i fabricated another back that was just enough material to house the AC connection i could always put the original back on if it came up but i'd imagine they'd be able to detect the glue not "Popping" on removal. From what i've read there's a little bit of friendly persuasion required to get the panel of.

What I want to know is whether an M3v2 sounds better than a real Princeton, pound for pound, clean tone with a touch of reverb.

Which version of Princeton?? Since you mention reverb, that limits it to 64 to early 80's versions (maybe late 70's, I don't remember when it went away). The 64 sounded drastically different than the silverface version, and vastly different than the later models with pull boosts and stuff (yuck). And you're ignoring the brownface versions altogether.

A Mustang III Princeton model sounds better than a silverface Princeton, but not nearly as warm sounding as a brownface.

You can't really ask for comparisons to older Fender amps without specifying WHICH version of that amp. Comparing an UL Twin with a 64 Twin is like comparing a Silvertone to a Hiwatt!
