I use mid and high gain HB with high output PU (7.5k the last one i bought) all and i dont have any clipping issue. Volume at 10 almost all the time. If you have clipping issue i think there is something wrong with the setup. I usually set the string-pickup distance based on the low E string clearness. If there is any mudness you have strings too narrows. This will also issue your sustain.

Yeah, but Mordor you're a metal guy I think, so maybe you like the raspiness.
It's not a harsh clipping that you get when overdriving a digitiser or sound card, it's just a bit raspy and soulless - hard to describe.
Maybe they added some circuitry (or DSP code) to do some soft clipping, like a brick wall limiter, but it introduces a certain raspiness which only bothers us guys who mostly play clean.

Hey, you actually nailed it! the Plexi was the one amp emulation I never used, but now I have your preset among my top 10 :)
Sounds particularly good with HB bridge pickup on my strat.

Thanks Jedi. I really appreciate the feedback (no pun intended) and glad you like the preset. I’m really pleased with it and I’ve found that my external OD pedal works great with this as well if I want to just kick it up a notch on the drive or use my Rat for a nice lead sound on it. Going to try out the JCM next chance I get to hook up the laptop. Shoulda got the MIII.

Exactly right. I love metal. Maiden is one of my all time favorite bands as well. I just enjoy playing classic rock type stuff more and tone-wise, I love the sound of a slightly smelly marshall. Keith Scott is another player that I really dig for a great dirty, Marshally tone. Though I think he had some Vox and other stuff (Dumble?) going on as well. Probably about as high gain as I’d go with the Marshall patch would be early Rush, another all time favorite band. Of course I don’t have a Gibson 335 or humbuckers for that matter so that might be a bit of a flight of fancy but now that I got that annoyingly hard to explain splinter out of the tone It’s like I have a new toy all over again.

Interesting read. I have the exact opposite preference- I love the Brit models and find the Dual rec and 5150 to be too harsh and trebly. I don't use the Super Sonic at all, as it sounds too buzz saw-ish to my ears.

Here's my experience:

I, too, struggled to find that perfect smooth growly drive tone. I own several guitars, both hb amd sc loaded. All were strat shaped, except for a tele and either alder or basswood. Ie, they were all "bright" sounding. All of them are passive with relatively low output p/u's. Never had an issue with input clipping. Even when I got over enthusiastic with an OD pedal, it didn't clip- just got quieter and more compressed. ( input limiter kicked in, I think)

I don't care too much for the onboard od pedal, I prefer to use external ones.

The halleluja moment came when I broke down and bought an all mahogany LP-alike guitar. This guitar is FAR darker sounding than any of my others, and almost at once it got me in the ballpark! It's loaded with a neck P90, and a bridge 'bucker. Just a touch of tweaking- mostly to the eq- and I was getting those smooth warm cleans, and growly edge of break up tones! On the downside, it's difficult to get those bright glassy cleans with this guitar. That's what the Strat and Tele are for!

FWIW, I tried the speaker cab switch so many talk about ( 2x12C), and LOVE it. My default preset is the '59 Bassman with a touch of reverb, and the 2x12C cab. The way the eq is set up, it's cleanish with the strat or tele, and dirty/compressed when using the Schecter Solo or HH Blacktop strat. I don't stray much from that, but when I do, I primarily use the "Plexi" model.

Great point… I didn’t even factor in the body type on my strat. Used to be an Alder body but in my ignorant youth back in the mid 90s, I decided to rip it apart and ended up swapping it for an Ash body so I have a much brighter guitar coupled with the glassy CS69s. The Lace TranSensor I had in the Bridge had a P90ish quality so probably toned down the Ash and I was just used to it that way. I have contemplated shoving that back in the bridge and seeing how it sounds as an option for the Bridge with the 69 in the neck. I really liked that Lace PUP, just thought I’d try something new. Need another Strat I guess. Its even hard to describe what I was hearing on the Marshall models. I’m not convinced it was digital clipping (didn’t really sound like it) but I suppose it very well could have been. Sounded to me almost like loose metal on the top end.

As far as the 212C cab goes, yeah I’m loving that too. I also put that on the Bassman and it just sounds so clean and full and with OD, it just sounds so creamy that I regret not immersing myself in Blues guitar style. Saw that tip from a post by modwiz here on the forum and by another cat on TGP I think and that made a huge huge difference in my opinion of this amp. Thanks Modwiz.

Yes..!
Lowered bridge and mid - definite improvement espec. on overdriven sounds
I replaced a broken switch not so long ago and had it all in bits.. never checked pu heights.
Thanks Strings

Just out of curiosity, what pups do you have markcc? I had my bridge to fender spec then lowered a tad but based it on a clean tone. Maybe I'll try lowering a bit more. Thanks for sharing your results mark and for suggestion Strings

Guitar is a 1981 Ibanez Blazer, so Ibanez pups which are fairly hot.
I've just set height by eye and playing. About 3 mm at high E and 4 mm at low E on all 3 pus - bit closer at bridge, tiny bit closer at middle...

Previously bridge and mid were a lot closer, about 2 mm.

I got my marshall the way I liked it through an overdrive-pedal. Thomann sells rebranded yoyo-pedals for like 30€ under the name Harley Benton, the ultimate drive is freaking amazing! I have had it for a couple of days now and are already selling my Maxon Tubescreamer (ts808). When the switch is set on high it has this warm marshall like sound, bitey, and the drive is very nice on this pedal, gets pretty angry and bitey and it is a lot quiter than the maxon tubescreamer.

My favorite marshall tone on this amp is the brittish 70s, I think the brittish 80s sounds kinda dull and boring/flat compared to the brittish 70s which is very warm and scratchy, somehow the 70s have more distortion than the 80s which is kinda weird I think

Plus a gazillion on that ultimate drive. I'll say it again. Best 30 bucks I ever spent. Glad someone else can now relate. Enjoy. I love it paired with the Brit 70s and 65 deluxe

I'm getting their Dyna Comp clone next. Found on amazon for 20 bucks.

Also, mark and strings, I lowered my bridge as low as I could. Definately made a improvement. Only have to back it off a hair to smooth it out the rest of the way but even all the way up its way more tolerable

Thanks for the tip and feedback.

Yeah also good to know for people that it works good with the mustang. It works good with the AMT B-1 also (which works really good with the "studio preamp" on the mustang). I dont get some distortion-pedals to work with the mustang though, like the Metal Zone (borrowed from a friend) and the Metal Muff (I don't know if it is that it doesnt work with the mustang or the fact that the AMT-B1 sounds so much better in comparison)

Gonna take a look at the dyna comp, I have also heard very good things about the Crunch Distortion (copy of MXR Distotion, which in its turn is a copy of the Marshall Guvnor ).

Did you hear that some guy rebranded the Ultimate Drive, repainted it, switched pots and sold it for 170$ as a boutice "hand made" pedal? It got really popular until some guy saw a picture of the Ultimate Drive and saw the parable between them, they found out the seller was a fraud!

Indeed. I was hesitant to drop a lot on a pedal for that very reason so figured for that price if it sucks who cares. Very Pleasantly surprised. I got the Biyang Fuzz Star (Muff Clone) that thing is amazing as well. Volume comes on a bit strong so you have to dial it in with care but works well. Didn't have good luck with the Dunlop mini Fuzz Face so traded in for a Rat. That too works well with Mustang. The Black Box that is part of the stomp models is pretty spot on when doing rhythms but not as smooth when doing leads... at least to my ears.

I like what i've seen on that pedal. I was under the impression it was an MI Audio Crunch Box. I'm definately getting that one eventually though. Or the US Dream (Suhr Riot). Gearmandude A/Bs the two. At those prices i might eventually have the whole collection LOL. The Sweet Baby OD is the Sweet Honey clone. Another Pedal to check out is the Biyang Distortion Max. Its a confirmed Rat clone with the LM308 chip. That's on my shopping list too LOL.

Yeah that was the Freakish Blues Alpha Drive. While doing extensive research on these pedals to see what i might want to buy, i came across a hilarious thread on the Gear Page i think it was. About a page and a half of nothing but high praises for the Alpha drive and then about halfway through, the news broke that it was a rebranded Joyo Ultimate drive with a resistor added and goop over the PCB for close to $200and then all the sudden everyone was bashing the pedal. Suddenly it was crap.

I'd love a Skreddy Lunar Module and eventually will get one but for now, i'm happy grabbing up these cheapies. Its fun and so far i've had better luck with the Bou-nese stomps than some of the real deals. The Ultimate drive next to a borrowed Keeley modded Vintage Big Box LM308 Rat was much better to my ears. At least paired with my Mustang. Crap... do i get the Dyna Comp clone or the Sweet Honey clone... i'm getting GAS.

Enjoy.

Lovely pedal that. Perfect for driving my blues jr.

I use a spark mini booster to bring the strat volume up for my mustang. But, as this thread shows, it is a fine line between maxing the input and overloading the input.
