Hi everyone,

I have a Mustang III, Fuse, and Ableton Live 9 Lite (the way it's listed in my Programs) and Windows 7. I'm trying to record with Ableton and I've gotten to the point where I have the wavy sound lines but I can't get any sound from my computer speakers or my computer headphone jack when I click the playback button. I'm missing something somewhere and I just can't figure it out, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I have not been able to use Ableton after many hours of reading all the info and tweaking this and tweaking that. Still can't get any sound out of my computer speakers. I've followed all the directions and still no luck. I'm sure I've missed something somewhere, but no program should be this hard to work with. I spent so much time with such a minor step, I can't imagine how much total time it will take to finally work through all the other stuff that is beyond step one. With all the millions of Fender Amp customers who get this program free, it seems there would be a tutorial specific to Fender Amp. The fact that no one has answered my thread for such a long time says that no one is using it and the answers that I have gotten on the other thread said to use a different program and not Ableton, this confirms for me it's a waste of time and effort.

I work as an Avid and Protools support tech in a post facility and can tell you that you're better off with Audacity or Garage band (if on a mac) I gave up on ableton about 5 minutes in for the exact reason you described. No software should be that un intuitive. Should be called UN-Ableton in my opinion

Good luck

Thanks captainc for the support, I was told a long time ago to use Audacity (by markcc and strings 10927), but being stupid, hardheaded and intrigued by the challenge, I couldn't give up. Maybe someone coming down this road will read this thread and save themselves a lot of trouble and learn from my situation, I sure gave it a good shot and didn't give up easily but It ain't like I wasn't warned. I'll listen a lot better in the future!

Yes, Audacity is a tad easier to use, but that is because Audacity is a shareware program that offers less.

Let me get one thing off my chest about Ableton: this is NOT free. It was bundled with your Mustang and included in the price. A big reason I went with the MIV V2 was the bundled software.

While you may be capturing wavey lines in Ableton, the USB output may be a tad low. Have you boosted the output? This is done in Fuse under the advanced options for each amp model.

I posted a tutorial on recording back in '11 http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=62673

Hi Archtop Bill,

Yes I boosted the USB output and that definitely had an impact on the wavy lines, but still no sound. One of the reasons I stuck with Ableton so long was it that it appeared to be a really good program with all the options one could wish for. What I had hoped for was someone that had used it and could tell me exactly how to get started. I have an electric guitar, a Mustang III, windows 7 so what I needed was very simplistic steps, starting with the connections. I'm still not sure if I could connect my Mustang III using the USB and make a recording, the Ableton tutorial all talked about using an interface and the one they use is a couple hundred bucks, I didn't want to spend the money if I didn't need to. I've uninstalled the program and I'm moving on, I'll try Audacity it will probably be good enough for me, I'm only trying to make some backup CD's with the guitar, so I can play my Eastwood Airline Electric Mandola instrumentals (check out the youtube demo's for the Eastwood Mandola). I paid $274.00 for my Mustang III 6/25/12. Fender had a $100 bucks off on a deal with Musician's Friend plus free shipping, so I got a great deal even if I can't figure out Ableton.

Hi thouston, great thread you had there, just confirms to me that I'm way over my head. Sounds like I was missing a few components as well.

An "Abletonism" is that channels/inputs need to be enabled. Just because the input was enabled to capture a signal, does not by any means infer it is enabled for playback. The skins in Ableton really do not help, imo, as it is hard to tell what the colors mean until it works. Go to mixer view and hover the cursor over the buttons.

Tony's thread from '11 is quite good. Just pay attention to the enable buttons.

I’ll admit, I’m probably pretty biased since I’m used to using Protools so when I was poking around the software was looking for controls and functionality where I’d expect to see them. I’m of the opinion that if you are just looking to lay down a quick track or two, you can do quite well with something like Audacity or Garage Band. If you are looking to get into more advanced recording, you’re going to want and need an external interface and something like the MBox stuff comes bundled with Protools LE. If I was going to take the time and effort to really learn how to use more advanced software, it may as well be something that’s more of an industry standard. Based on the tutorial above I’ll give it another go. My recent upgrade rendered PT9 inoperative so might as well see if I can put it to use and give it a fair shot.

I don't know if this will help...

Quote:

If you're getting 'wavy lines' then Ableton is successfully recording from your Mustang. So you've done everything that is "specific to Fender amp" correctly.

The extra thing it sounds like (if you'll pardon the pun) needs to be done is tell Ableton what output device to use. Note this can't be the Mustang amp - because the Mustang doesn't support audio going into it over USB. You have to tell Ableton to use your standard PC soundcard - and whatever amp/speakers/headphones/whatever you have plugged into those.

(NB you could plug the headphones-out from your soundcard into the aux-in of your amp - but, from the PC's point of view, that isn't using your amp as an output device, you're still using the PC's soundcard as the output).

In the Ableton "Audio Setup" window, what do you have for:
- Output audio interface
- Left output channel
- Right output channel?

In the Ableton "ASIO Settings" window, exactly which items are selected? You should have the Mustang selected for input, and exactly one output device selected. Check that there aren't multiple outputs selected.
