Apologies in advance if this has been covered before, but I couldn't find it.

In an effort to to cut down on background hum, which is caused by the Mustang Floor (process of elimination with the rest of my rig) I found reference to the noise gate on the advanced amp setting. Setting this to maximum does reduce the background hum to an acceptable level.

However this seems to introduce a strange background 'fizz' noise which only happens when a note is played. It seems to lag slightly behind the note and ceases as soon as the note is stopped. I've tried to find a common factor, it seems worse if stomp boxes are used, but even without these (ie amp alone - I use the Bassman a lot) it's still there.

Has anyone else noticed this? If so, is there any way to get rid of it?

Same observations here on my III.

The noise gate isn't a solution (unless I'm using it wrong) because as soon as the guitar's output increases past the gate value you hear that noise that you hid with the gate until the guitar's output drops below the gate value. Very annoying. So all you're achieving with the noise gate is silence between notes.

You're right that some effects are worse than others for this as are some amp models. There are 4 or 5 presets that are completely unusable. The one named "Phaser" (or somthing like that is the worst example). I posted about this a few months ago in a few forums and got back: "that's normal"... "amps make noise, what do you expect"... etc.

So in the end I stopped using the Noise Gate to solve this and just found some presets I liked that were less noisy, downloaed a few more (there's a Pink Floyd and a John Mayer preset on the Fuse site that are great) that are good and I stick with those 5-10 presets plus my Boss effect pedals.

^ thanks for the input.

Seems a bit tough to only be able to use a fraction of the advertised capabilities. Also I bought the Floor precisely to get away from multiple pedals, I don't want to go back to that!

Do Fender have any comment?

I should add that I'm essentially happy with the Mustang (for what I paid, it's good) but having better noise rejection available as a option in the DSP would make this a stellar product.

LOL you guys.

john_uk: another thing I forgot to mention is that I plan to pick apart the presets I do like, find out what makes them tick and build other presets from those and overwrite the ones that are noisy. That's a rainy day winter project though...

Thanks adiabatic, if you find anything useful please let me know and I'll do likewise.

I've already overwritten 20 or so patches with my own versions, I tend to use these rather than the factory presets. I did find some useful patches on the Community site, some garbage as well.

As regards the noise gate, I do find this useful in reducing the overall noise level, it's just a big problem that the noise remains when notes are played.

hmm, 'adiabatic' means a process where no heat gain or loss occurs, interesting name!

Yeah, but that is just the nature of the beast.

I couldn't think of a username one day and started flipping through a thermodynamics book on my desk. :D

I spent my working life as an engineer specialising in thermodynamics, so terms such as 'adiabatic' are very normal to me but not something that I would encounter very often outside of work.

:D
