I recently bought a Blackstar ID 260 TVP and LOVE the sound. I love the setup and the simplicity and ability easily obtain a good sound. However, I am really frustrated with the signal routing options in this amp. It comes with a stereo out (for recording) and a (mono) line in. If I want to be able to use an effects loop I have to lose both of these in order to obtain it. Even then the effects loop is in mono (most l likely because of the mono line in).

again, I love the sound and the ease of use - I'm just frustrated because in order to practice at night I need to use headphones. I've got some stereo effects I'd like to place in the loop but I can't use them simultaneously with the line out and line in. it seems kinda silly.

Anyway, I play mostly metal and have heard some bad things about them. One thing I like about the blackstar is the closed back cabinet. It gives it a nice beefy sound that I'm afraid the fender won't have.

I don't have the ability to easily audition one so I've just heard clips on youtube. I play mostly metal such as maiden, metallica, priest, candlemass, as well as some classic rock. a good high gain sound is important to me.

has anyone played both amps for comparison? Those of you who play metal - how does it sound?

well, no need to say you are comparing apples with oranges and on top of that we are talking about tone which is as subjective as a conversation could get.
But aside from that, our friend Mordor74 did some good testing on a couple mustang metal tones that you might find useful:

Personally I think the high gain on mustang sounds WAY better than line-6 (line 6 sounds cheap and inarticulate, with near zero tone dynamics), but most people think otherwise... go figure :)

For what it's worth, I have an MIII, and find that it has a wealth of depth to the tone. Like any other amp, you just have to adjust the settings for the enviornment. Ie, open back or not, this amp can push some serious bass!

I learned a simple trick for tuning an open back cabinet:

Get a piece of plywood and some velcro. Place the wood against the back of the cab, and try different variations of fully closed vs semi closed until you find what works best for you. Then just cut the board to size, and use velcro to hold it in place. Paint it black or apply some tolex, to match if desired. The beauty is that it's removable, so you can have both an open back or a closed.

As for the TVP, I think the lack of a hard wired fx loop was an oversight, and they came up with a way to have one, if desired. I would not be at all surprised to see that feature get added to future editions. This is their first foray into solid state amps, and it sounds like they placed the emphasis on the sounds, rather than extensive features. ( and rightfully so, I might add) All the other big modelling amp builders are several amps/editions in. One of these days I want to give one of these a go!

Thanks for the useful information. I will check out those links.

Tone is definitely number one, which is why I didn't mind paying a premium for the blackstar - again - awesome sound! - its just that I am now starting to discover some of the limitations of this setup - especially for home use. In a live situation its probably not such an issue.

You're right - I would expect to see a loop on the next edition - especially since their tube amps have a stereo send and return as well as a direct out.

ah well - can't have it all I guess...
