Hi everyone:
I don't quite understand why there is an xlr out on the fender mustang but I think I see many recommending using the effect send output when connecting to mixer/pa. Can anyone explain the difference between the two? That is my main question, but if anyone also wants to comment on the difference between using one of these outputs and just using a microphone, that would be awesome, too.
Thanks!!

That recommendation applies to the "V1" mustang amps that didn't have a separate line-out socket. With the V2 amps, the XLR output (line-level output) is the better way to connect to a PA, mixer, etc.

The XLR output is balanced; using that means you can still use your fx-loop for its intended purpose; I think there is a separate volume control for the XLR level. The XLR output is a proper line-level output; using the fx-send for this purpose works, but isn't what the fx-send is intended for.

Perhaps largely personal preference. Some people like to mic-up their amp and send that signal to the PA, as that gives the full accurate sound of their amp. However, because the Mustang's have cab simulation, etc, built-in to the audio signal, you can get the full sound (well, almost; people's opinions vary) from the line-out without needing the extra equipment / hassle of mic-ing the amp. Plus of course a mic would pick up unwanted ambient sounds, with a direct connection to the PA you don't get that.
