Does Fender itself think the Mustang line represents its best amps, at least in terms of value, and/or what it really thinks is the future, even for serious players?

If not, why is the "mustang" category (where I am typing and you are reading this post) listed first in the list of the different subforums in the amp family of forums?

Fender is very proud of their whole Mustang line; just like a mother or father looking at their newborn baby, colt or what have you.

I have no idea what Fender think. They barely make any leftys unlike some of their competitors, so my main assumption is they don't think too much.

But most stores I go to reckon the Mustang their best selling practice amp. So Fender probably thinks there's enough people out there who have one/listened to one/thinking about buying one, and will have plenty to say about it.

I'm a "serious player". I make my living teaching and playing guitar. I use my MIII for gigging and sold my Hot Rod Deluxe. Never been happier with my rig.

perhaps it's on top because they figured with 'computerized' amps they'd get a lot more questions and feedback than the traditional SS or tube amp. Note, the order is: Mustang, GDEC, Fuse.

Whatever the case, they should be proud, these are fantastic amps that really give the 'modeling amp' competition a run for their money.

Yeah all that really matters is each person's preference, but I'm a bit OCD and I like to find support for my feelings. I like my M4 v1 and I'm a home-only player for now. (Trying to find a drummer to jam with.)

I keep hearing from old timers including some "high up" folks that where the "real tube amp" really shines is at very high volumes on a stage, live application. The fact is, *most* buyers are not famous musicians who do outdoor gigs and stadium gigs for 15,000 people. John Mayer would not use an M4 on stage to play an outdoor gig in front of 14,000 people. But you know what? He doesn't use a Deluxe Reverb or even a Twin Reverb either! He uses about 3 different 100W two rock and fender heads into six massive 2X12 cabs plus miked up of course.

So we are really talking about home use and gigging in small clubs when we compare real DRRI vs Mustang 3 or 4 (talking about picking one grab-and-go amp, whatever it may be).

So I like when I hear like the above commenter and many others that they do gig and are perfectly happing giggin with M3 or M4 where most normal even working musicians gig--a bar or club with 3 to 30 people "watching" where the M4 can be waaaay to loud for that venue.

I saw such a thing just last Friday night at my local dive joint where local indie bands play. The kids turn it up way way too loud with too much distortion and it's just noise.

Now this particular kid I'm talking about right now had a DRRI actually, but I know that when I find a drummer and play a gig there, I can use my M4 and be plenty loud enough with master on about 4 or 5 and even with some clarity in my tone (Nirvana's noisiest stuff is like classical or jazz music in terms of actually having musical notes and song structure and riffs and clarity compared to this noise most of these kids are playing.)

Not to mention my M4 lets me use headphones in my home.

Blind test between Mustang III v1 and Deluxe Reverb Reissue... quite telling. The Mustang was chosen about 57%.

Before buying my Mustang IV,I went to my Local music store and literally lined up all the amps that were in this category. (Price/Processed...etc.). I'm not going to name the amps. I had 6 amps in the line up and went there with an open mind. Through trial and testing the one remaining that stood above the rest was the Mustang. I'm not saying this can beat a Mesa...or some other high end amps. But for the price and what I was seeking it was the one that won the line up. Im pretty happy with it, I gig it, and use it all the time.

Interesting. No such tests are ever 'conclusive', but I much preferred the Mustang on the soundcloud recording, the DRRI sounded boxy. However, on the video, I think the DRRI sounded much more like the Mustang did on the soundcloud, if that makes sense.

If anything it only demonstrates people hear things differently, and nothing replaces getting in front of an amp yourself.

I'd always assumed the list was just in (approximate) chronological order, with the newest amp ranges first, and with all guitar amps above the bass amps.

Fender is rightly proud of the Mustang line and SHOULD be way more proud of the G-DEC which is a phenomenal practice amp! I cannot believe they discontinued it... they should have at least incorporated an updated G-DEC 3 Thirty into the Mustang line (similar to the Spider Jam incorporated into the Line 6 Spider line.)

It also doesn't consider how cumbersome it is to get the amp into the state where you compare it. In my opinion, the Mustangs have good sound, and lots of features, but you have to fiddle, squint and memorize an awful lot to modify settings.

For example, you can't just increase/decrease reverb by twisting the reverb button. Instead, turn it to a selection between B1 and C2 (depending on what kind of reverb you want - the rest are delay effects), then hold down "Exit" and twist the knob again to change the amount. Non-intuitive, to say the least.
At least with the III/IV, you get a panel to look at, but you still need to know what to twist.

Another example: Add some overdrive.
On my Orange, I hit the overdrive button, then crank the dial up to where I want it. Takes a second.
With my Mustang, I have to find a model that has overdrive, which doesn't necessarily match what's displayed on the plate. Perhaps it's the third from the bottom in the red bank. Then use the gain to control the overdrive, but that increases the clean gain too, so I have to adjust the volume accordingly. And, of course, enable/disable other effects to get it to match what you had on the preset you were on. This takes squinting, guessing, listening, and several minutes.

You absolutely have to create the presets you're going to use ahead of time, because real time adjustments besides volume simply aren't feasible.

Yeah, lots of options, and good sound for a SS, but not all that user friendly.

I just downloaded a new preset from Fender FUSE last night, didn't have to fiddle, squint, or memorize anything! Just downloaded the file, loaded it on my amp, and off I went! :D YMMV

That's not modifying settings, that's changing presets. Big difference. Say you are on stage and want to turn off the overdrive, but not change anything else. Wat do?
