My son started playing guitar 10 months ago and has the Mustang1 V2 AMP. He liked all the different sounds available and I liked that it doesn't hum like his little starter amp did. He has had it for some time and now wants a stompbox....but looking into them I don't think he really does because this amp seems to do what I think a stomp box does.

Hopefully I can explain what he would like to do and someone here can tell me what he needs. He would like to be able to switch between sounds without having to get up and turn the dials on the amp. He also is interested in being able to play a snippet and have it record and loop as he plays along with it. I don't think he really needs a stompbox, but am not sure exactly what I am supposed to be looking for.

He just started using the additional computer software and is discovering new sounds. From the little I read here neither of us really know all of what this amp can do, and the manual isn't really informative. Any additional info you might like to share about features he probably does not know about are appreciated.

Thanks!

You need an amp with footswitch control. The Mustang 1 supports a simple one-button footswitch that lets you flip between two presets. If you want more than that, then the Mustang 3/4/5 support up to 6 switches (a four-button plus two-button footswitch), and also an expression pedal. These footswitches allow you to select different presets, or turn effects on/off within a preset, depending how you configure them.

Then there's the Mustang Floor, which has more foot buttons, but is just a floor unit, with no power amp or speaker. You could connect it to the Mustang 1 (to save on short-term purchases) but that wouldn't give the best sound. Other topics discuss what works well with the M-Floor.

Of course, other manufacturers make floor units like Fender's Mustang Floor, at various price points above and below the M-Floor. The M-Floor seems to be generally considered one of the better-sounding units, and competitively priced. Also other manufacturers make amplifiers with varying numbers of footswitch controls. Again, the Mustang range seem to be considered amongst the best-sounding and best-priced.

You need a "looper." Some amps and floor multi-fx units have a looper built-in, but they typically support quite short loops (less than a minute). The Mustangs don't have a built-in looper; this is something that is often asked for. You can buy a separate looper pedal and use it with the amp. It's usually best to put the looper in the amp's fx-loop (nb two completely different uses of the word 'loop' here). For that you'd need a Mustang 3/4/5, the Mustang 1/2 don't have an fx-loop. You can still use a looper with the Mustang 1 (you put it between the guitar and amp input), the restriction is just that you can't have different sounds for the 'recorded' track versus the 'live' track. Note with the M-Floor you'd probably put the looper after the M-Floor's output, the fx-loop it has isn't in the right place for best use with a looper.

Correct. "Stompboxes" are mostly for sound effects - these are exactly what are built into the Mustang. You can buy stompboxes that do effects you can't get with the Mustang - either completely different things, or just subtle variations. But the range of effects already in the Mustang mean you can probably do most things, to an acceptable level, without needing such external effects. Of course the advantage of stompboxes is that they (almost always) provide footswitch control as standard, which solves your other question - but as above, you can get footswitches for the Mustang amps. Also an external looper pedal looks like a (big/wide) stompbox, but is a different type of unit than an effects stompbox.
