Hi guys.

So, after fooling around with my Mustang III V2 for some months I think I finally settled for my desired setup of this thing. I'm not comfortable to use patches of sounds and rather have sets of amps which I layer sounds over (the traditional way I guess).
We had a thread about using real pedals upfront to the mustang a while back and this might well be the logical extension to this discussion?

I plan to setup the best basic amp configurations (maybe 10) available in this awesome box and drive/ flavor the tone with external pedals (well the few I have) plus some modulation effects which I can turn on/ off with the 4-way switch... (I do have the 4 & 2 button switches + the exp-1 plus some pedals (OD, fuzz, EQ))

So ideally I would have some (potentially very different) amp setups to mess around and maybe some optional modulation settings I can activate if desired (I do not have any delay, phaser, etc. pedals and hardly use those sounds so having them deactivated in the patches should be ok)...

1) What do you guys think? Anyone doing that as well?
2) What were your preferred choices of bare amps for this? What are best in general in you opinion?
3) What true pedals have you successfully used with the amps (I was testing a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 with some light-gain British Colour amp setting for instance, awesome!)?

I'm especially interested if there are settings which tend to take OD, fuzz pedals better upfront than others...?

So basically my setup currently is:
guitar > OD / fuzz pedal > basic mustang amp setting (opt. some modulation effect, off by default) > FX Loop with looper & EQ/ booster > ...

I use a MIM Fender with standard single coils and a Gibson SG...

On a second note: I seem to have problems dialing in comparable volume levels between my patch setups. How do you do it? Just click through them and adjust the level knob? Measure?

Cheers,
mmax

One of the main reasons I bought the MIII (V2) is to get rid of the clutter on the floor so I would rather not use any external fx, but I do use this amp as I would a normal amp.
I only use 2 amp models my clean is the 59 Bassman and crunch and lead channel is the Brit 80's, I like using the 4x12V cab with the Brit 80's model.

I use the MS-4 switch for preset selection only, QA-1 Clean - QA2 Crunch - QA3 Lead(Boosted volume and some delay) and use the MS-2 switch for adding OD and chorus, I balance the volumes by ear and it works great for me... real happy with this setup!

When i test external overdrives i have a preset with the '65 with the gain at the limit of the clean (around 4) that to my ears pull out the real soul of the stomp.

That's pretty much how I use my v1 MIII. I find a bare amp that I like- '59 Bassman for example- and layer on effects as desired.

I'm a pedal geek... (just can't resist the temptation to look at and try new ones) So the fact that this amp works and plays well with them is great. I've tried quite a few, from OD/distortion, to chorus, Flanger. phaser, trem, and delay.

My current setup is:

guitar> OCD> Phase 90> Boss Flanger> MIII> fx out> TC Corona Chorus> Boss Tremolo>fx return.

About the only onboard fx I regularly use are the awesome reverbs ( room and hall esp!), and the tape echo. ( does a great slapback,) I've also found myself fiddling with the gain control more, to get my dirt from the amp models rather than the pedal. It's simpler than rearranging the first three pedals to switch between dirt before the mod and dirt after the mod.

When I do use a separate delay pedal, I like to put my Carbon Copy in front of the amp- it really sounds good that way.

I've also had success layering dirt pedals in front of it. You just have to watch out for your input level- too much and you'll run into the "firewall" protecting the digital circuitry. That's the main difference between this and a traditional tube amp setup. You can't use, say, a Tube Screamer to kick the amp in the face. They don't particularly like really high output pickups either.

It's the real beauty of the Mustang amps- it's SOO flexible in how you can use them.

I agree with you that in general digital amps does not like really high output pickups. But we can always compensate with the onboard OD or with the amp gain itself. Indeed the Mustang seems to have a larger sweetspot in the gain stage than the origan counterparts. Also the midgain pickups do a better job in get clear and lowgain situation.

Straight bare amp models I've been using the most are:
Marshall Plexi
Marshall JCM
Mesa Boogie (Rectifier?...)
'57 Deluxe Reverb
Bassman
Vox AC30
Super Sonic

The Marshalls (Plexi 70's & JCM 800 80's) for both Rhythm & Lead applications. Using the amps onboard gain for grit and punch.
Both sound great with a Wah pedal as well. Tight and defined. The simple comp is very nice. Gives an even balance between the high, mid and low frequencies. Favoring that over the amp's compression emulation. But the compression is pretty darn good. Simple comp's more "organic" and I'm somewhat Old-School anyways so it works better for my
style and tone preferences.

The Mesa is great for solos. Very articulate. Also kicks hard for Crunchy Rhythm.

Deluxe '57 for both Country and Old School Electric Blues. The mid on that model is full and rich. Hits you down below the belt. A lot of folks really dig the "65 Twin but, I prefer the Deluxe over the Twin. Breaks Up better. The Twin is too clean. I lean towards amp gain, even for cleaner tones I have some gain on it. The Deluxe responds better.

BassMan is great for Blues Rock, Classic Rock Lead & Rhythm. Amp's gain is gritty, warm and sweet.

Vox AC30 is great for Hard Blues/Blues Rock. Stevie Ray type stuff sounds especially sweet thru that model. Rock the gain at about 6.5 and Simple Comp it. Very Nice!

Super Sonic for Old School Crunch. The amp model just screams. Warm, articulate and tight. Punchy and responsive. Also takes the Simple Comp well.

Going to experiment with outboard dirt in front of the amp. Be nice to put some cream over the top of what the amp's already got inside it.
