Hi!

I made a small recording and since there is a great debate on the quality of the high gain models on mustang and line6 i wanted some opinion from you all.

Here is the link of the recording:

And here is the full story of the test i made:

More test to come!

well they definitely sound drastically different. To me, the Line6 sounds like a guitar amp with several flannel blankets draped over it. The Mustang has more clarity ... almost too much clarity. Did you adjust the sag/bias settings for the Mustang preset?

great comparison, very close indeed, just some treble adjustments required if you want 100% match.

Line 6 uses technology that is 10 years old, I would be surprised if they do anything better than the Mustangs.

Actually the only real contender to the Mustangs, IMO is the Amplitube software. The only issue with amplitube (apart from running from a computer which is a nightmare in itself) is that it has so many knobs that I never really dial the tone I like. I find it much easier with the Mustang.

Going back to high gain stuff, some time ago I created a preset that tries to emulate the Engl Powerball, probably the meanest amp I ever came across. I think I came close to it but I'm no expert in high gain. I actually copied this one from Amplitube and it took me a while to get it right.

@strings10927:

I did not tweak nothing in the SEG/BIAS/ADVANCED section since my goal is not make the mustang sounds exactly like the toneport or netter than the toneport, just compare the two basic tones and see if the line6 product is so much better than the fender one in the high gain field as everyone says. I honestly dont hear anything better in the line6 tone but it may be a lack in my hears.

But, definitely, to my hear the Mustang model has more gain and much more notes definition...

@jedi2b:

i think that the comparision with a toneport gives an advantage to line6 since toneport is XT technology, their 3rd generation of emulation while the spider amp is 2.0 technology (the same as the POD 2.0 ) and the line6 spider cost more than the similar Mustang and also there is no amp with TX techonology actually in the market (you can get an HD or a flextone but only used and they still expensive).

I also have my own powerball preset on the mustang, maybe i will do a demo with the line6, your preset and mine! :D :D :D

excellent, I have a collection of emulated amps, (the Engl is one of them) that I'm always trying to improve. so any insights would be very welcomed, particularly because I do not have access to a tone port myself.

When the toneport goes below 100$ I might give it a shot, now is way overpriced for what it provides.

Hey Mordor, great job!

Personally I think the Line6 sounds cheap and underwater compared to the Mustang options you compared.

Now, comparing you preset and mine I reached the conclusion that I would like a mix of both :)
I like more the definition and presence of mine but I like it more the bottom of yours,
I wonder if it would be possible to do a bass boost of mine, should experiment with that later.
Or if more high end could be added to yours.
