I have been playing for about 10 months so I am new at recording. I have a Fender Mustang 3. I have tried to record using Ableton with no luck, I have decided to buy software to record. Do i need additional equipment to record or can I just use the usb port on my amp to record? What software is good and relatively inexpensive to buy? Any imput would help. Thanks.

What was the problem? Did you just not like Ableton, or were you not able to record any sound at all? If the latter, you'll likely have the same problem with any other software, so suggest you get the issue sorted now before just trying a different recording program.

You don't need any other equipment. Make sure you have installed the ASIO driver, as most recording software will use this rather than the normal Windows audio driver. (Note that the FUSE installation will install the latter, but you have to install the ASIO driver separately as per instructions elsewhere in this forum and on Fender support website).

Ableton may not be perfect or your personal ideal choice, but I'd suggest sticking with it, as you already have a licece for it, or pick another freeware one, for your first foray into recording. Then when you have a better idea what features etc you want, that's the time to choose some appropriate software to buy.

I can recommend a free program that's very easy to use. It's not as full featured as Ableton, but you can use it to make basic recordings just to get the hang of it.

Check out Audacity:

Website  http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Here's a recording I made using Audacity, backing tracks downloaded via Fender FUSE and my Mustang III v1. I imported the backing tracks into Audacity and used the USB connection on the Mustang III to record the leads. No additional hardware (other than the guitar and a computer  ).

Here's a playlist of Mustang III demos, all recorded the same way:

Don't you have to compile your own version of audacity if you want asio support?

Hi DarkPenguin, it was just a simple install of Audacity.

Neato. Cause I installed the version you have and it doesn't seem to support ASIO. And their wiki indicates they don't. Did you get your copy along with a product (sound card, etc) you bought?

Yes, neato. It works out just fine for my application, Audacity was downloaded from the same link above and just a basic install. My sound card is nothing special, it's what happened to come in my Dell PC.

To be honest, I'm more of a computer person than a recording person. I just wanted to be able to record some leads over some backing tracks, and that's exactly what I was able to do. I think the results speak for themself.

OP's question was as follows:

No question about using ASIO, so I didn't reply about ASIO, I replied about recording software that will allow you to record via the USB on the Mustang amp.

Here's the statement on the SoundForge website about ASIO:

By default Audacity uses the standard Windows drivers, but often the Windows
drivers only offer basic (2 channel) support. In the past, some
manufacturers have provided full featured Windows drivers that support
multi-channel recording (as is the case with the MultiMix on Win XP), but
unless they have also provided multi-channel Windows drivers for Win 7 you
will not be able to access multiple recording channels unless you use ASIO
drivers.

Audacity cannot be distributed with ASIO support due to licensing
restrictions.

http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... _Interface

Audacity can be built from the source code with ASIO support, but it's not
easy unless you have experience of compiling source code on Windows.
However, if you want to try, in addition to that page on the Audacity site,
there is also a thread on the Audacity Forum about building Audacity with
ASIO support. http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic ... 19&t=53826

If you don't want the trouble of building Audacity with ASIO support, and if
multi-channel Windows drivers are not available for Windows 7, then your
options are to either change your operating system, or use a different
program (one that supports ASIO) for recording. You can still use Audacity
for editing your recordings, even if you use a different program for
recording.

Ah! I thought I had hijacked the thread.

Thanks for the note about the multichannel drivers. I'll look into that. Presumably if you dell works my dell ultrabook should work. I'll try audacity on that.

I have installed the driver. When I try to record nothing happens. I have changed the setting to asio and fender mustang amp. I keep trying with no luck sometimes I am getting sound from all over in the house and then sometimes I am getting just my guitar, when I get sound from my guitar I try to record and nothing records.

Sounds like your PC also has a microphone, and Ableton is recording the input from that along with your guitar input.

See this article:
http://www.fender.com/support/articles/ ... -computer/

In the "ASIO Settings" window make sure that only the Mustang amp is selected for input and all other inputs, especially the PC microphone, are disabled. Actually, I'd methodically / laboriously go through every settings and configuration window I could find, not just the ASIO ones, and make sure the PC's microphone isn't inadvertently enabled anywhere else too.

Hi soul8205

We will be happy to assist. It seems that you've been given some great advice from the forum members. Please take a look at the link that scott-uk provided (thanks again scott-uk), it will explain how to successfully setup the correct signal path in your ASIO settings. Please let us know if we can assist further.

Just a heads up about another possibly free option for recording other than Audacity.

If you own any of a specific range of Behringer products you can download a free limited edition of energyXT. It's limited to 8 tracks but most people who are using Audacity aren't using more than that any way.

energyXT is only a little more complicated than Audacity (if at all) and once you get the basics down, the work flow is it's strong feature. I've been using it exclusively for about 8 months now, I feel in love with it right off the bat. I have left REAPER (which I used for several years) behind - just too much... endless menus and options and stuff I never use.

A basic tutorial for recording audio in it can be found here:

http://energyxt.blogspot.com/2011/02/recording-audio-in-energyxt.html

Just to show how easy it is to use. There are several youtube vids as well.

Any way, if you go to the link below, there is a drop-down list box with the supported Behringer products. If you own one, type in it's serial #, your name and email and they will send you a license key.

energyXT 2.5 Compact BEHRINGER edition

The actual program that you download is also a demo with saving of projects disabled - it is here.

energyXT's development is s l o w w w w... and it is not great for doing complicated, large projects. It's strengths are it's simplicity and fast work flow.

I went ahead with the upgrade myself as it was only about $16 at the time.
