I'm wondering if any old expression or volume pedal can be used instead of the EXP-1 pedal and can be used the same. I'd buy Fender's, but $90 for something with pretty crappy reviews is hard to justify. I'd much rather buy a pedal that I could use with my other amps if it's possible. I'm suspecting the EXP-1 isn't really anything more than a plain old volume pedal......but I'm not sure. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks.

Hi Drewph,
I have the expression pedal from a few days (and also the 4 buttons footswitch):
from what I was told by Fender Technical Support Line, you can not use this pedal with other pedalboard as you would with an expression pedal Roland for example.
EXP-1 handles digital signals that allow remote controlling of almost all parameters in sections AMP, STOMP, MODULATION, DELAY AND REVERB but probably these signals do not have a MIDI encoding standard and therefore would not be recognized by other equipment. And probably Fender Mustang will not recognize MIDI signals coming from other brand Expression pedals.. You can use other Wha or volume pedal but just as stomp effect : before the amp Input or in the Send - Return path)

in EXP-1 there are two modes: Volume and Expression pedal and you can switch from one to the other with the ability to choose various options in the pedal menu as a switch from expression to Volume mode by fully depressing the pedal in toe position.
And decide whether to let the effect "on" (the effect section with parameter controlled by the expression mode) when you switch to the Volume mode , or on the contrary, turn off / bypass that effect, when you switch to Volume mode.
You can store a couple of complete settings (volume pedal + expression pedal) independently for each preset.. so you could save for example a preset with the pedal Volume max at 7.0 and the next preset with p. Volume max at 10.0.. i gave a wrong information (see the EDIT note)

And some other useful options . To know them all you should download and read the advanced manual of the amplifier in the appropriate chapter.

So I would not say that it is just an old volume pedal .. in practice you buy two types of pedals enclosed in only one.
however, it requires a precise calibration if you want it to be accurate 100%. This because the felt and rubber feet tend to bounce back slightly the pedal from the minimum and maximum position (heel and toe) if you do not keep it to the extreme limit with the pressure of the foot. I recommend you do the calibration by moving gently the pedal with your hands going to touch (almost without applying pressure) positions Heel and Toe. In this way I have had excellent results of accuracy.

Dimitri

EDIT: i just discovered that you can store only one global pedal Volume setting.. so this will be the same for all presets. You can store a different setting for each preset just for Expression Pedal section
