Hey everyone. I'm looking for an amp for college and really like the Mustang 3. It sounded good, moderately inexpensive, and the controls were incredibly easy to use. I feel as though 100 watts would be too much for an amp in a dorm room though. So what I'm wanting to know is if this amp can be played at relatively low levels and still sound good? I know you can use headphones but I don't want to have to do that all the time.

The subject came up before (I can't seem to locate the thread). It seems I am in the minority in saying there is a limit to how quiet you can get an MIII.

I find late at night, with a 3 year old sleeping upstairs, it's hard to find that sweet spot where it's quiet, but not quieter than 'flicka flicka' noise my pick makes against the strings. I need it real quiet and I personally find that difficult at times.

For the 'quiet' you are going to need in at college, you can probably get the job done easily. Most others on this forum seem to be very happy with the MIII for low volumes.

This is where I get stuck...I need to hear the sound out of the speaker louder than direct from the strings. This is hard to achieve with continued satisfaction so I often just grab the headphones when others are sleeping. But...this is not a problem with the MIII but generic to the problem of living with others. The headphone output is good...and you can get some good definition at low volumes from the speaker, but nothing like what you get from truer volumes.

Depending on where you make your purchases, you could ask to take the amp into a smaller room and see how you like the way it sounds at low volumes...and ask to borrow some headphones for comparison.

Cheers.

Possibly. It all just depends on who all I meet up there.
