Hi all,

Sorry if I cannot find this information here. I was wondering how to connect my Digitech RP 255 effects unit to my mustang 3? Can I just use the effects send and return loop on the back? I would like to ultimately use the effects unit and still have access to all the mustang presets as well.

Thanks,
slang75

See my replies in this topic, in which I explain several different ways of connecting an effects unit to a Mustang amp:
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=86192

That topic is talking about using a Fender Mustang Floor in conjunction with a Mustang amp, but exactly the same connectivity options, with their pros/cons, apply to connecting any other effects unit, such as your Digitech, to a Mustang amp.

So if I just wanted to use my digitech rp255, i would connect it to the send/return jacks and just be using the amp for sound?

If you connect your Digitech in the amp's fx loop (using the amp's send/return sockets as you describe), then presumably you're connecting your guitar to the amp's guitar input?

In this case, you're getting the Mustang's amp modelling and effects first in the signal chain, then all the Digitech effects, then the Mustang's power amp.

However, if you just want to use the amp for sound (ie power amplifications, as the last part of your sentence implies), then you should connect your guitar to the Digitech's guitar input, and the Digitech's output to the Mustang's fx-return. Don't connect anything to the amp's guitar input or to its fx-send socket. In this case, you don't get any amp modelling or effects from the Mustang.

Slang,

I have the Digitech RP255 also. First thing I did was rig it to the Mustang amp. What I found, however, is that the digitech is a MAJOR tone suck. Even using a "blank" patch on the digi, it lowers volume and gain levels on your tone. Do a comparison with the RP255 in and out of the loop and you'll see.

On other amps, that little multieffects is great. But it just doesn't play well with the mustang. It's a shame because I wanted to use the wah/volume pedal and some of the distortions from it as I feel the ones built into the amp are pretty average. Trust me though, the pick attack and clarity will suffer greatly with that thing plugged in. It's almost as if you draped a blanket over the cab. That's what it does to the tone.

The RP255 by itself is just not set up to do what you want. The RP1000 is. I have an RP250 and am currently using an RP1000 with my M3v2 with the 4CM, which appropriately gives me the options you seek. You could read this posting for some ideas/insights:
viewtopic.php?f=27&t=85912

Even with some creative cabling, your amps/cabs will generally have to be off in the RP255 anytime you want to use a Mustang patch. As well as I can imagine, there will be no way for you to properly engage distortion and mod/delay effects simultaneously since the 255, unlike the 1000, has no way of separating and routing pre (stomp/distortion) and post (mods/delays) effects to their proper inputs (pre-->amp front panel input; post-->efx return). The RP1000 does this automatically by simply pressing the "Amp Loop" button (along with bypassing the amp models/cabs), allowing you to use it as a pedalboard+RackEfx unit. It does exactly what you want to do with the RP255 and it does it the right way. It's a beautiful thing with any amp but with the M3v2 (or other Mustangs with an Efx Loop) it presents you with a mind-numbing number of possibilities.

With an A/B box and a simple 4CM alternative you can very easily use the RP255 and the M3v2 in an "Either-Or" configuration. With the right "Blank" preamp setting, you might be able to use the RP255 "post" effects (mod, delay, echo) with the Mustang patches. There's also the possibility, again with an A/B/Y box, of running the RP255 signal in parallel (layering) with the M3 via the aux input (or a y-adapter on the Efx Return).
