I'm getting terrible hiss in many of the presets and several are unusable. My prefered playing style is a clean jazz/funk style and this hiss is unbearable as it fills the silence between notes and also ruins the clarity of notes.

These sounds happen with no guitar connected, guitar connected, through the speaker and through the headphones. Here's a iPhone video of the issue. Presets #32 and #59 are among the worst and annoyingly those are two of the ones I want to play around with. The iPhone mic doesn't pick up the full intensity of the hiss (if you listen to my clip wiht headphones and turn the volume to medium-high levels you'll have a better idea)... most of the video is recorded with the Master Vol at 4.

The noise seems linked largely to the stomp pedals because it drops dramatically when I switch them off. I don't suspect my house wiring as the house is only 10 years old and the outlets I have tested are properly grounded.

I've plugged the amp into outlets in different rooms and floors as well as plugging into a high-quality computer UPS.

I have read advice on other forums that increasing the noise gate reduces the hiss. Well yes it does but you still hear the hiss when the picked string exceeds the minimum value of the noise gate then you also cut off the last bits of sustain.

Looks like you had the Master volume set at 4 ... a little loud for playing around the house. It's a 100 watt amp.

In your video, I hear hiss on a lot of the presets I would expect to have hiss:

Pasadena's Phaser
Balls To The Wall
Sic Delay Comp
Twisted Lead
Cold Sweat
Liquid Solo
The Evil Bassman

There were lots of hissy presets when I first got my MIII (V1). They were all the presets where some programmer layered a whole bunch of effects, or the high gain amp presets. That's what a lot of those actual high-gain amps, pedals and settings sound like in reality, so that's what the modeled simulation sounds like.

By now, I've dumped most of those presets and programmed my own presets, mostly using the Fender models and some with the Marsha.....er 'British' models. They sound fantastic - not overly 'hissy'.

You have to keep in mind with this series of amps ... while it is possible for a jazz player to find sounds they are comfortable with, that's really not the market these amps are aimed at... thus 'HIGH SPEED AMPED UP AND LOUD'.

Volume 4 is where I start to get even with my neighbours for having noisy kids. Playing normally at 2, the hiss is still obvious... I'm at 4 for the video because I couldn't line up the iPhone's mic with the speaker and have the video the right way up.

I expected the noise floor of modern DSP to be a lot better. I'm not sure I go along with the hiss being reflective of accurate reproduction of amps but I'd like to hear what the Fender staff feel about that and if it's true then I suppose I have to start creating my own presets or return the amp and purchase something else. Also, if true it would be nice to have some of those classic amps avaialble in a clean version.

I should try recording via the USB to see what the noise is like because the high-gain/high-distortion MP3 clips from Mustang owners I've found on the net are dead silent.

I don't hear anything out of the ordinary for a 100-watt amp on "4" with stomp boxes enabled. There's going to be hiss. It's the nature of amps and pedals being used together. Why would you think a "modern DSP amp" would be any different? That's like saying a modern car with a 500 horsepower engine should be quiet because it's new, and if it's not, well then it's the manufacturer's fault. It makes no sense. No way around it, no matter what kind of setup you have (Mustang or otherwise).

I don't think I said that right, what I mean is if you take a 100 watt combo amp and try to simulate the sound of a Mesa Boogie stack (for example), the hiss would be a byproduct of trying to replicate the sound of that amp. Not that the hiss is necessarily 'programmed', but that's what you end up with when you try to replicate that balls-to-the-wall high gain sound.

YESSS! Definitely try creating some of your own presets first, the built in presets are cute to show what the amp can do, but to be honest, there is only one that I've ever really used - 'Supersonic Burn'. All the others I've replaced over time with my own and what I downloaded via Fuse. I also very highly recommend searching the Fuse library and downloading what some other users have created. Try searching for presets created by user: Orcatraz. They are some of the best out there.

It's pretty likely that one of those dead silent demos you heard was mine. Yes, the amp sounds significantly different when recording via USB into a computer. AFAIK there is nothing analog at that point, which is one reason it sounds so clean (almost sterile).

I really think most, if not all, of the hiss you are hearing comes from the power amp and speakers, not the DSP. When you record via USB you bypass both of those.

After more experimenting last night I think this is the way for me to go - start customizing. 100 presets aren't going to please everybody :)

I did a short test last night recording via USB and it seemed clean. I wanted to test more in depth but the Ableton software took forever to install and then install its libraries. By the time I was finished that it was way past bedtime.

I have heard similar hissing on my amp. But my recommendation, is to experiment with those presets.

Temporarily lower the gain, or turn off the stomp or modulation for those presets to see if anything changes.

If you find that turning off an effect cuts the noise. Turn it on again and tweak the effect to figure out what setting within that effect causes more noise. You don't have to save the change of course. You're just poking around.

Also try the basic amps 85-99. They should be noticably quieter.

Good luck.

Thanks, yes I had a similar thought and have started to learn the differences between the presets that are low noise and those that are high.

For now I've found some very good presets on the Fuse downloads that I'm happy with so I overwrote those on some of the presets I don't like. :)

If this helps:

I've been using my M3v2 for a few months now. I use a floor modeler, with it's master volume (output) level set to 50/100 (unity gain is 33/100), using the 4-cable method. So far, I have not really used any of the presets in the M3v2---the amp is working aces for me as a power cabinet (but next week, since I finally have a week off, I will be matching and comparing patches). To make a long story short---I don't think any unusal hiss is coming from the power amp section of the M3v2. "4" is generally the loudest I ever have to play with (indoors/outdoors) and the amp is not putting out any idle hiss or hum at that level, whether I run 10-ft or 20-foot looms. Also, I use a Sennheiser G3 wireless. I have found the amp to be pleasantly noise free on stage.
