Hey everyone,

So I bought one of these Fender Mustang Amps and I'm liking it a lot, and I've been practicing with them for like the past two months, but recently I've been getting this ringing sound whenever I play high notes. If i play the 17th fret or above on the high E string, it makes this annoying ringing sound. It sounds like someone doing fast tremolo picking on a single note. But this only happens when i use the gain. On the green; clean channel (whatever you call it), the ringing doesn't happen. I already updated both my amp firmware as well as the software, but its still there. Also my guitar cable has kinda gone through a lot of abuse, so could it be the one causing the ringing sound? thanks

At first glance, I'd say it seems more like a guitar-related problem than an amp related problem. Is the action on your strings correctly setup? If your action is too low it could cause the higher notes on the thinner strings to cause irritating noises because they aren't vibrating correctly.

I highly doubt it's a problem with your jack cable, if it was it would happen with every preset, in every note, and would be highly identifiable. At least for my experience. I doubt a bad jack cable can make your high notes make a ringing sound.

If your guitar setup is cool than I'd have to say it must be something about your amp, I don't have any physical experience with mustang units aside from trying them on stores, but from my in depth research on them, I found nothing that sounded similar to your problem, maybe someone else can assist you further.

All mustangs models and versions exhibit a bunch of issues when the instrument input is saturated, this usually happens when using very hot pickups, or any sort of booster pedal before the mustang. This creates all sorts of tremolo-ringing-undulation undesired effects. Look on the forum for a lengthy discussion about this issue. Fender knows about the issue.

The only solution so far is to lower the input signal and boost it internally to the mustang using any kind of effect either in the pre or post amp position.

Hah. thanks guys for all your replies. I found out the problem is from my guitar. The amp is working fine, it's my bridge pickup that's causing the ringing after all. At first i thought my string action was too low, so i adjusted it. My mid and neck pickups all sound fine, even when the gain is on full. I guess i'll have to get a new bridge pickup :(

In fairness, this isn't just a Mustang problem. Any amp, or indeed any electrical/electronic device, will exhibit undesirable behaviour if its input signal exceeds the maximum the device is intended to take.
