Hi Everyone:

I have primarily been an acoustic player, but am learning (and loving) how to play electric with a band using the Mustang III. I would really appreciate your thoughts on the following:

Our band plays mostly modern country and classic rock (e.g., Jason Aldean, Tom Petty). I've been using the Country Deluxe preset (Uses Compressor Stomp) for rhythm, which has worked pretty well. However, I need more from the lead. What would be your suggestions for improving the lead tone/volume/sustain when playing with a band ? For example:

1) Making a new preset using Country Deluxe but with more gain, more volume, or a different stompbox?
2) Using another preset already on the Mustang III (suggestions welcome)?
3) Downloading another preset from the community (again, suggestions are welcome)?
4) Other?

I know this is a newbie question, but keep in mind the Mustang is my first electric amp and I have no experience using effects, etc. I plan to use the two-button switch. Again, I would really appreciate your help--thanks all!

Well, if you turn the data wheel counter clockwise, it'll take you right to the basic amp models. If you don't find one of the other 88 presets that you like ( or that sounds close enough to modify), I'd start here.

Do you have version 1 or version 2?

If it's V2, the Green box ( Tube Screamer) or Ranger booster would be right up your alley for giving you a lead boost. I have a V1, and haven't played around much with the overdrive stomp effect on it, as I own some regular pedals I use for that. You really do need to play around with the different effects to see what they do, and how the controls work. It's part of the fun of learning Electric! I like to look through the presets for an effect I'm not familiar with, and turn it on and off, to see what it's actually doing. Then fiddle with it a bit, to see what all can be done with it. I wish Fender had included some info on these in the manual, but there's so many of them, we'd have ended up with a small phone book...

Also, when you create your lead preset, turning up the volume control ( the one by the gain- NOT the Master) will give you a volume boost over the Country Deluxe preset. That will be saved as part of your new preset. That's really what that control is for- adjusting the relative volume of the presets in relation to each other.

IMO, the best way to go, if you're using the footswitch live, is to save your favorite sounds right next to each other. Say, put your Country Deluxe rhythm as the default 00 preset, and your lead as 01. Then it's only a single click to switch between the two. If you want to add a boosted solo tone, add what you need to the lead one and save to 02.

I got a hell of a nice tone out of the 65 Deluxe Reverb model by turning the gain and volume up, then adding the fuzz stomp to it. Very Neil Young-ish.
