Hi everyone,

I'm new here -- I just bought a III v.1 on clearance a couple days ago and, as a guy that has a basement full of tube amps, both vintage and what I'll call "semi boutique", I am tremendously impressed with my new toy, to the extent that I'm seriously considering selling most of the amps I have, some of which I've had for 10 years or so.

I have a couple questions...

1. someone mentioned that the efx loop is in a different place in the chain between V.1 and V.2. More details please?

2. I bought this amp with the idea of maybe buying a 2nd one eventually, in order to have a stereo power amp solution for my pedalboard (which has an Ethos Overdrive pedal on it, which can act as a 2-channel preamp). Does anyone have any idea about how the III would work in a pure power amp mode? For instance, does the master volume control affect the volume of the amp if I'm just plugged in to the power amp return jack? (I know I can determine this by experimentation, but I thought someone might just know this and save me the trouble.)

Thanks,

Dave B.

On the V1 amps, the fx loop is after all the Mustang's DSP effects, just before the power amp. This is fixed, you can't move it.

On the V2 amps, the fx loop can be set to one of two positions, provided that you have 2.1 firmware I believe: (almost) after all the Mustang's effects and signal routing, or a bit earlier in the chain, just before the cab simulation (and after everything else). See this document for info:
http://support.fender.com/manuals/guita ... tsLoop.pdf

I say "almost" as you'll see there's a subtle difference in the "after everything" position, depending whether or not headphones are connected. Also, if you have the 2.0 firmware the fx loop position is fixed before the cab simulation, I believe.

From what I've seen of other people's reports, it works great as just a power amp. Although that seems to miss the point of having one, if you're not going to use all its features. If you just want a power-amp-with-speaker then the usual recommendation is a Tech 21 Power Engine (although I've never used one of these personally so can't comment).

Yes.

Scott,

Thanks for your detailed answers -- just what I was looking for.

Despite what I said, I probably won't use the amps in a pure power amp mode too much, but I wanted to know how the power amps work w.r.t. the master vol and such.

Note that I said "amps" -- since I posted my query, I've found a 2nd Mustang v.1 for a bargain price on Craigslist, so now I can try out a stereo setup!

cheers,

Dave.
