Hi y'all,

I'm the really proud owner of a Mustang Floor, and I'm used to plug it into my band's PA.
We recently changed our PA for a Yamaha EMX88s. For each track, I have the choice between Hi-Z Jack or Low-Z XLR. There's also a "pad" button that lowers the sound by 30dB.
To which input am I supposed to plug my Mustang Floor in? I must confess I'm a bit confused, any help would be welcome!

Thanks guys!

Hi soulboogaloo,

We will be happy to assist. Since you have the option of an connecting your Fender® Mustang™ Floor using the XLR outputs to your new Yamaha EMX88, this is the much preferred option. With XLR will be able to get a balanced signal, which you might not get using the Hi-Z inputs. So in your case we would recommend you get a pair of XLR cables to connect your Mustang Floor unit to your new Yamaha device. Please let us know if we can assist further.

I too am the new proud owner of a Mustang floor and was wondering this myself however if instead of stereo and two cables can I set the floor for mono and just use one XLR and one channel on the PA? instead of taking 2 channels on the PA? will this work? or am I defeating the purpose of the XLR?....would it not be balanced?

Yes, you can do exactly this.

Read the "Advanced Owners Manual" for your Mustang Floor, page 7, section "Utility Menus."

Under "Output Configure" you'll see you can set the output to either stereo or mono. If you set it to mono, the M-Floor internally mixes the stereo signal to create a mono signal. This mono signal is then sent to both the left and right outputs (XLR and jacks).

The XLR outputs are always balanced, the mono/stereo setting doesn't affect that.

So you can use just one XLR jack (it seems it doesn't matter which you use, either left or right) to send a mono signal to your PA.

What is the advantage of using the XLR over the 1/4" input? (Still new to this new tech) will the Balanced signal give me more power?....better sound?

Our PA head is a Phonic 8 Channel and set up simple mono output to the mains

XLR allows for a balanced cable. Assuming you use such a cable, and the connection at the other end is also balanced, this will help shield the signal from interference more than with a 'normal' 1/4" connection.

How much difference this makes depends on the length of the cable run, what interference the cable is subject to over that length, and how much you care or are sensitive to the interference!

XLR doesn't give more power than 1/4".

XLR doesn't create better sound; the signal coming out of the amp is the same for both sockets. But XLR can help reduce the loss of sound quality due to interference in the cables.
