I got my cute little Mustang I V2 today. While happily enjoying it’s possibilities the one thought I had immediately was that it should be no big thing to modify the footswitch input via a new firmware so that it accepts an EXP-1 instead of the one-button-footswitch. Hell, maybe even both (first the pedal, then the switch plugged into the pedal).

Why? I don’t necessarily need to switch between two sounds at home but I sure would like to alter my tones by controlling parameters in real time, be it a wah or cranking up the gain or fading in some echo trail. And Fender would sell some more EXP-1’s …

What do you think?

Seems like I’m the only one musing on an expression pedal controlling the two smaller siblings, too.

Astonished

This isn't just a firmware update, it would require hardware changes too. The Mustang 1 and 2 footswitch socket is just a simple open/close switch for a one-button footswitch. The Mustang 3, 4 and 5 have more complex logic attached to the socket to detect different types of switching from the MS-2 and MS-4 multi-button footswitches, plus the position of the EXP-1 pedal etc. I imagine it's almost certainly impossible to add such hardware/logic to the Mustang 1 and 2 amps (as the amp internals are all custom chips).

Plus a real wah sounds vastly better than the apology for one in the Mustang.
TBH I reckon Fender did it to enocurage users to upgrade to M3 and above.
