After my headphone jack broke twice, I decided to fix it myself with a better quality part. Some people have requested that I show how to do it, so here it is.

WARNING, DOING THIS WILL VOID YOUR FENDER WARRANTY!
Proceed at your own risk!

Ok, the first thing you need to do is disassemble your amp. This is for a Mustang III, other models will vary.

Step 1, Disconnect the blue speaker wires. Gently pull them off.
Image

Step 2, Remove the screws holding the board located directly above the speaker. The pic shows one side, but there are 9 screws total including the back edge.
Image

Step 3, After the screws are removed the board will drop down. Gently pull the blue speaker wires through to the top side of the board.
Image

Step 4, Remove the 4 screws from the top of the amp, 2 front corners, and 2 handle screws. Theses screws hold the chassy in place so be sure to reach underneath with your hand and support it while you take the last screw out, or it will fall.

Step 5, Remove the chassy. This is how it looks from the top.

Step 6, Remove the knobs. Gently but firmly, pull up on the knobs until they come off. There is a little plastic ring underneath each knob that also needs to be removed (except for the data wheel).
Image

Step 7, Turn the chassy over and note the long green board closest to you. You have to remove the 10 screws around the perimeter of this board. Also note that green grounding wire that is attached. Make sure to put it back when reinstall everything. Also, be carefull not to pull the other end of that green wire from the chassy, it is just held on by adhesive.

Step 8, Once the screws are removed you can flip the board up.
Image

Step 9, Here's a closer look. You can see one of the jacks on the left hand side, (I previously removed the broken one). You can take off the rubber button pad if you wish, doing so may prevent accidently burning it with the soldering iron. Just pull it off gently.
Image

Step 10, The easiest way to de-solder/solder the jacks is to gain access to the back side of the board. To do that you have to remove the little square board. Gently use a pair of needle nose pliers to sqeeze the plastic pin holding the board while gently but firmly lifiting up on the board. There are 2 plastic pins. The other 2 coners have rubber pads that are held on with some sticky substance. They will pull off and still be sticky when you put them back on.

Step 11, Here it is removed. You can see 2 patterns of 5 prongs coming through the board. The one with the black marks is where mine has been heated up and repaired before. Now, use a soldering iron to melt the solder around the 5 prongs. Get them hot then move quickly around to keep them liquefied while you pull the jack from the other side. It may help to have an extra set of hands for this step.

Step 12, Solder the new one in the same fashion. I'm not great at soldering but as you can see I managed to accomplish the task. It was however somewhat of a pain. So I elected to not replace the other one until it needs it.

Step 13, Put everything back together in reverse order. And here is the finished product.

wow, one of the most useful posts in this forum for sure, great job :P

I can see that replacing the rocker (the big dial) should not be more difficult than what you did. Frankly, after the phones I would expect the flimsy rocker to go next. It could probe more difficult to find a replacement for that one.

Finally, replacing the instrument input and fx-loop looks even simpler so that might be worth looking into.

Thanks!

Little bit OT:
Does anybody know, where to find a Step by Step for a broken USB Port Jack? The one of my Mini broke :( The only thing I know is that it is soldered directly to the board. And that a friend of mine is quite experienced in soldering electronics. Is it maybe possible to replace the boardmounted jack by a wired one and to fix the new jack somewhere else?

This procedure would take some advanced skill I think. However you decide to mount it, it would still need to be wired into the board somehow for it to work.

Here is a picture... notice how there is a small board soldered perpendicular to the jack and then that assembly is soldered to the main board.
Image

Here is the side view of the board... notice that it plugs into a terminal block on the backside that is attached to a second board.

If you attempt to do this, I wish you luck, and hope you share pictures!

Edit: I don't know if a Mini is the same, but I assume it would be similar.

Thank you so much for the pictures Scorpeon! Yes, that really looks like an advanced skill... It must be similar in the Mini.

I even dont know when and how it happend, but the inner plastic piece of the mini-usb port broke of and maybe with the try to plug in the jack I damaged the little metall contacts inside. S***, without USB and Fuse you can't even rule the mids on the MiniMustang.
When I am back in my hometown I will show the pictures and the little amp to my friend who is much more expirienced in soldering. Until then I have use the presets that are saved to the amp.

If your main concern is desoldering the broken item there are two things you want to look into:
1) wire braid specially made to 'soak up' molten solder
2) a 'solder sucker' - a little spring loaded thing which sucks up molten solder when you release a plunger
I have to say neither (IME) are a perfect solution but they help.

My Question
Has anyone had any success adding a line out socket?
I'm tempted to add one and just do it parallel wired to headphone socket - is that an ok way to do it ?
(I guess it should ideally go before the master volume but that could get complicated)

Thanks Scorpaeon!!!!

I found this post while trying to fix my GDEC which had a broken headphone jack. Even though the amps are very different and the GDEC has a small micro board with a USB interface also and not the Mustang type jack, this gave me a place to start and some confidence to repair the amp before throwing it away, out of warranty. I emailed fender for the part and had it shipped to me and after a few attempts to put amp back together, it is working again. I love this amp for its ability to play backing tracks from an SD card and use my Mustang for the guitar.
