I am wondering if I only connected one of the XLRs to a pa for a slight bit of sound reinforcement. is that OK? What would be the issue if any, because I would be using one instead of both? Would using one just be mono? Or, do I have to use both ? Thanks!

Hi mak1965,

Thanks for your inquiry. You are fine to connect only one of the XLR line outputs on your Fender® Mustang™ III (V.2) amp. The only thing you will miss is the stereo output. You will be using either the left or right channel signal only. So, for example, with stereo effects such as with a delay line, you will not hear the full behavior of the effect. Otherwise, you should be good to go.

Please let us know if we can assist further.

Best Regards,

Thanks so much! I tried it using the Left XLR into my pa, set the input on PA to line, and yeah the sounds are coming through perfect. How can I expect otherwise! Thanks! You guys made me happy with this amp!. Mark

Two questions:

1. Should I get a Y cable to combine the two to a single input on the PA, or should I randomly pick the left or right XLR out?

2. What % should I set the line out boost to? Would 100% be the best sound quality?

To do this properly, you should use a two-into-one mixer. A Y cable will give imperfect results, reducing sound quality. In the extreme case (unlikely to happen, but possible so I mention it) it could damage the amp.

It depends on the input sensitivity of your PA. Start at 0% and turn it up until the level is acceptable without any distortion. Having it too high will simply overdrive your PA input pre-amp, which you want to avoid.

For the 2XLR-->1XLR, you might want to investigate:

What does the button between the 2 XLR outputs do? I think it said "Ground lift".

Ground Lift:

Normally, the earth/ground/shield connection of the audio lead is physically connected to the ground/earth connection of the amp power supply. This ensures everything is properly earthed, which is what you want.

However, if you have two pieces of powered equipment, one at each end of the cable, then each one will be trying to earth the signal cable to its own power supply. In theory, this should work fine. However, subtle changes in voltage around the building wiring between different socket outlets, or even along the length of a power cable, can play havoc with this.

You get what are called "ground loops" which are little eddys of current flowing through these earth connections. They're harmless electrically and don't compromise the safety effectiveness of the earth connections.

But these ground loops can cause undesirable noise on audio signals. The "ground lift" is intended to help cure this. What it does is disconnects the power supply earth from the signal cable, thus breaking the ground loop. You should only do this at one end of the signal cable, so that the cable is still properly earthed at its other end.

Make sure you turn off the ground lift if the equipment at the other end of the cable doesn't have a physical earth connection of its own.
