I have that hiss on many presets on my new Mustang 4 (v2)... which I do not have on my Mustang II (v1)..... I have read some people just replace their speakers and it goes (I also changed the guitar leads etc which I thought were the problem but the hiss remains)

Anyone recommend a good quality 2x12" replacement speaker/s I can put in for around $200-$300...

Thanks
Dogs

I don't see how changing the speakers alone would reduce/remove hiss - unless the original speakers are faulty. If there's a hiss in the signal, then any decent speakers will make that hiss audible. If anything, better speakers would have more detailed/accurate reproduction and make the hiss more audible!

before you gut your amp, try the following:

-while connected to the same power outlet move the amp in all directions as far as the power cable will permit, also rotate the amp in all directions. In my case moving the amp 10 inches to the right solved almost all hisses :)
-while you are having the hiss, connect the USB port to a nearby PC, if the hiss goes away you have some sort of ground problem on that outlet. If that is the case try a different outlet in the same room or a different room. These effects might not show up with a M1-2 because power supply designs are very different.
-Some preset are noisy just because of the complexity of the signal chain. Disconnect the instrument cable from the amp and check for hiss. If noise is still there, play with different effect levels until you find the offending effect. Move that effect to the post-amp position.

If everything else fails try the following:
-lower your guitar volume as much as you can and compensate increasing amp gain, this will in most cases reduce noise
-move away and off axis from the amp. hisses will only be heard if you are up close and really centered in front of the amp. As a rule of thumb (for any guitar amp), you should be around 1 feet away from the amp for every inch of the speaker diameter, for it to sound optimal. On a tiny room a 8" speaker will sound better than a 12" speaker IMO.

If everything else fails, then replace your speakers... but beware, hiss is in the high frequencies, so chances are if you find speakers with poor enough high frequency response that the hiss goes away... then your guitar will sound like a bass :)

jedi2b - Thanks will do all of the above and see what happens

I also bought a CS lead and will try that... better to spend $40 to solve possible problems and try your stuff then spend another $200

Hi dogsbrekky,

We wanted to chime in here. It looks like you are getting some good advise overall. Thanks scott-uk & jedi2b for your assistance here. We would also advise that you check things out with the amp "stock" before trying to swap speakers, etc. to confirm whether or not there is an issue with this particular unit. Keep in mind that with the high gain models/Presets, it is normal to hear some additional noise, as with their analog counterparts.

Also, I see that you have moved from a Fender® Mustang™ II (V1) to a Mustang IV (V.2). So, you have a significant jump in power output and speaker performance. So, will be more likely to hear more of what is happening with the larger amp in more detail. Please let us know if we can assist further.

Best Regards,

To emphasise a point hinted at in some of the earlier replies...

Some of the amp models on the Mustang deliberately have hiss - because that's what the original analogue amp being modelled did! Noise reduction in the 60s wasn't really a priority, so a lot of the circuitry inherently introduced unwanted effects such as hiss.

So to an extent, some hiss is to be expected - it's one aspect of high-quality, authentic modelling of vintage amps that I agree is perhaps a bit frustrating! Personally I'd have preferred the models to mimic the desirable tone qualities of the original amps, but been a bit more 'modern' in terms of suppressing the unwanted artifacts!

Thanks all.... I probably mis-represented HISS.... I undertand the analog models had some noise associated with them as do the high gain models or any model on high amplification... my problem seemed to be more unit related... but following all points of view above, I intend moving my 4 (V2) to my large attic room and playing it from 18 feet away using a new Custoim shop lead I just purchased.... will advise if all above etc works..

As a post note - I moved my Mustang II (v1) back to my apt in the city and now play it through some okay headphones... wow, the Hendrix presets and low gain 65 Twin etc sound AWESOME in isolation through the head phones..... really perfect (almost)...

I will advise on my Mustang 4 results soon

Hi dogsbrekky,

Thanks for your reply. That sounds like a good plan. You may want to also connect the amp to a couple of different power sources in case the noise/hiss is related to your electric supply/grounding, etc. And please let us know if we can assist further.

Best Regards,

Also This may or may not be something you already know. But I have a mustang lV the original version I am not sure If your Mustang is the same or similiar. But on some of my presets if there is high gain I will also get Hiss.Especially If the Volume is turned up.If Fender still has same features Most of the High gain amps have a Noise gate you can use to cut some of the Hiss out.On mine You would press the Amp button. Then press again.on the second set of dials(digital readout on amp)there is a button for Gate. You can turn it up to high Or med.Whatever works bettor for you.You can try that.Good luck.Sorry if I am suppling wrong Info. Not sure if you are talking about a Hiss or more of a Hum.

Fixed

Ok, I broke in the speakers a bit better by leaving the whole thing overnight with a small tone through it... and using my Custom Shop 18 foot lead and standing further away from computers, microwaves etc removes alL the annoying hiss..

Also noticed I have a small noise problem from my Strat around the toggle/Pup switch so will re-earth that today and all will be perfecto..

Some of the tones from this Mustang IV (v2) are BLOODY GREAT

Hey dogsbrekky,

good to see it is working right for you now.
Question: how long and how loud (master volume) did you leave you tone working out the speaker?

Started at volume, gain and master at 3 for 3 hours then master volume on 5 and volume on 8, gain on 5 for about 4 hours and played for about 6 hours each day with each on 4/5 or so.... and military earplugs and headies... then overnight left it on for about 12 hours at each on 5 (put the loud mongrel in the basement under some nice foam blocks...but could still hear it a little on the 3rd floor).

BTW it is BLOODY LOUD ON CERTAIN presets at anything above master on 2... with any type of normal output Pups... my Vintage Noiseless attentuate the sound nicely though.
