Volume sets the loudness of the preset and is stored as part of that preset, Master Volume sets the overall loudness of the amp.

The volume control acts in the same way as the master output on a tube amp-whereas the gain control is the preamp output; both of these can colour the output of the amp with respect to gain/overdrive. The mustang master volume knob controls the power amp output and does not add any extra tone, only volume.

Thanks, so would it be correct to say the volume knob works with the gain knob for colouration

The volume knob works like a normal volume knob on a normal amp, except the setting is specific to each preset.

The volume setting for each preset allows you to balance the volume against your other presets.

Then when you have the volumes of all your presets sounding good with each other, you use the Master to change the overall volume of the amp to whatever's appropriate for your current playing environment.

when you say
The volume setting for each preset allows you to balance the volume against your other presets
do you mean that the volume setting set by fender for each preset should not be altered

I don't think that is what he meant. In fact, most people find that the differences in volume as you scroll through the presets to be greater than they would like. By going preset by preset and changing the volume setting of each one and then saving, you can make it so the presets are all closer to the same volume.

So the volume knob is only used to balance the level of loudness between all the presets then?

So i guess this is where the real difference with tube amps come in ,
With a tube amp the volume knob colours the sound and the master volume sets how loud its going to be heard.
where as in a modeling amp the volume is used to balances the sound between presets and the master sets how loud its going to be.
Is this correct?

exactly. What you call volume-on-tube-amps is modelled on the mustangs using the "gain" knob. In some amp models you have also the extra option of the "master volume" setting which emulates the master volume knob on those same tube amps.

The volume and master volume physical knobs on the mustang do not colour the audio in any way. zip. nada.

I know, they (and I) use the word "volume" in many different ways in the Mustangs and is confusing, but you will get used to it.

the way I prefer to adjust the amp volume(s) is as follows:
1-dial the cleanest preset you like (twin 65 is a good candidate)
2-put volume physical knob to 10
3-increase master volume knob to the maximum your wife/girlfriend/baby/neighbour would tolerate. NEVER touch this knob again unless you move to another environment or your wife/girlfried/baby/neighbour change their tolerance level.
4-dial any other less clean preset, adjust volume knob until it sounds at the same level as the preset selected in step 1
5- repeat step 4 ad-nauseam
