I have owned the Pod Hd 500 for 8 months and play live with this twice a week, direct to PA. I recently transitioned from a fulltime Gibson player(5+ years) to a Strat Addict! I am not happy with my Pod HD 500, but am a little affraid to jump ship until I get some feedback from my Fender Family...The strat mafia!

I cannot run to an amp as we run a silent stage. Must be direct to pa. Saw a review on Youtube by Nstuff music that makes me think the Mustang Floor is much easier and sounds better????

Let a brotha know folks! :P

You can configure a more complex signal path with the HD500 - in terms of number of effects and their ordering. If you need that facility, the Mustang Floor may not be for you.

Conversely, it can be hard with the HD500 (perhaps because of its flexibility) to setup good-sounding tones. The M-Floor is much easier to work with and get good sounds from.

The M-Floor has very good amp models; whether they're better than the HD500 is a personal choice, you really should try it before buying to confirm if it has the sounds you want.

I've never used a Line 6 HD500, but I've had other line 6 stuff: a Spider amp, a POD Pro, and a PODxt Pro. Then I had a BOSS GT-Pro. Now I have a Mustang Floor. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but I very much prefer my Mustang Floor over all the rest. I realized that I gravitated toward mostly Fender models in the other units, and Fender does Fender best. I love the Mustang Floor.

Sounds like the right choice for me. I'm going to buy at GC since they have an awesome return policy. Time to get rid of my pod HD 500 I believe.

I had a similar story to yours.... I had been a Line 6 user for over 10 years. I really liked all my gear (POD X3 Live) until I upgraded to the POD HD500... I thought I had the world by the tail with all the programming flexibility and new HD models and millions of effects/mic placements/cabinets etc... I had that unit for over a year and a half.... I was never 100% satisfied with the HD and it took way to long to tweek, tweek, tweek to get a "good" sound. I tried the Floor on a whim in our local music store and LOVED it.... SO much that I sold my POD and am using Strat > FLOOR > RC3 Looper > Tech21 Power Engine 60 (and 2 larger shows I have done, output XLR into House PA System). The Floor is extremely simple to use, very little tweeking needed and I LIKE the simple and dedicated Stomp, Mod, Delay and Reverb and Volume/Wah control. Plug in your strat, set your correct output mode in the Utility menu (more than likely PA System or PA+Bass for you) and you are good to go....POD was too over the top..... Get the Floor - it can't be beat for $200.

 I'm getting pumped about the Mustang after that last reply. I love the rc3 looper idea as an addition! Gonna give it a shot....

JasonK913,

At your request, my setup is as follows:

Strat--> Mustang Floor input (Floor Output set to PA System in Utility Menu) (I also have my Floor set to MONO in Utility menu) ---> Input into Boss RC3 Looper --> output looper into ----->

CHOICE A: Left output1/4 inch out to Tech 21 Power Engine 60 (with all controls set to 12 O'clock - except volume as you can do what you like)

or
CHOICE B: PA System (still use left/right outputs 1/4 or two XLR cables if stereo - don't forget to change your output to Stereo in the Floor's Utility menu) if you do not have an amp/Tech 21 and have a Stereo PA setup.

or
CHOICE C: Left 1/4 inch output into Tech 21 Power Engine ---> Output XLR out to House PA System (and use the Tech 21 for a stage monitor - does not colour your sound).

I bought a Mustang Floor about eight months or so ago, when they were $299.00. I had a Mustang V Head before that, but it fizzed so I sold it and bought the Mustang Floor. I really like the Floor layout a lot better than the Mustang V that just had the 4 button switch. The Mustang Floor has some of the best fender amp sims and I use it most of the time for recording. I do have a couple of 40 watt powered monitors I use for practice and low level stuff. I also have a QSC GX5 pa amp with a Rane dual band eq for more loudness. I run that into a 2 x 12 cab with two 16ohm Texas Heats.

I also have a Zoom G5 that I use mostly for the modulations, delay, reverb and other effects in the effects loops of my tube amps. I have tried to use it as a standalone solution like the Mustang Floor, but it does not come close as far as tone and realism that I can get with the Floor.

Since they have dropped the price on the Mustang Floor, I think it is the best thing going for recording and garage jamming or even gigging, if you have a loud enough power amp for it..

Most of the time I have the two XLR's hooked into my firewire mixer, the two line outs going into a Boss RC3 and either into my 40 watt monitors or the rack rig I put together. I never have to worry about messing with miking my amps, just fire up Propeller Head reason and use my firewire mixer and the Fender Floor. I have a whole bunch of amps to choose from that sound really good in the headphones and track really good...

At $199 and a 30 day money-back guarantee what have you got to lose? If you do like the Floor so much better, you will get more than $199 selling your HD500 used!

The simple answer: If you are a pro with effects units you can get more out of a HD500. But if you are not so proficient and don't have a lot of time to play around and experiment; the HD500 is more confusing and confounding than it is worth.

On the other hand, the Floor is vastly simpler to use and to tweak and create your own patches. There is not nearly as much customizable options... but that can be a good point because the options you do have available all make sense tonally. The Fender tones cannot be beat by any other floorboard processor. However, some folks don't think the heavy sounds/amp models are as good as Line 6. Also, no built-in looper.

My thoughts exactly! I love the simplicity of the Floor... Very easy to use and quick to get a GREAT sound!

I really did like my POD - there were many pluses about it that I liked over the Floor...but I was never really happy with my tone due to the "option overload" that the Pod offered....

I do miss some of the options...but don't miss the headache of setting the thing up and playing with all the options.... too many....

Do I get better sounds with the Floor....maybe.....
Did I get better sounds with the POD....not sure....

Which one did I have to tweak, tweak, tweak...and stilll tweak.... The POD

Which one is easier to use ..... The Floor by a mile

Which one am I happier to use? I sold the Pod and still own the Floor.... end of story! I am VERY HAPPY with the Floor....

If only Fender would offer the Intelligent Harmonizer and Pitch Shifter with the Floor....would rock my world!

agile70strat mentioned the "option overload" on the Pod HD500. That was my frustration with the PODxt Pro, especially with the effects. Way too many options for each kind of effect, then when you finally picked one, it had way too many parameters to program. Then, I was usually not satisfied with the sound I ended up with. I finally gave up on the effects and got the BOSS GT-Pro with the intention of using it for all my effects (who does effects better than BOSS?). Then I was surprised to realize that in most ways, I even preferred the BOSS amp models. Got rid of the PODxt Pro and just used the BOSS GT-Pro for many years. Like I mentioned earlier, I realized that I preferred Fender amp models for almost everything. When the Mustang Floor was first announced, I did a lot of research on the Mustang amps. Figured I might like the Floor better than anything I had before. Got one, and never looked back.

As you said, DapperDan7, Fender does Fender best.
I don't think I'll ever be convinced that Line6 actually understands what that classic Fender "feel" is or how to reproduce it. For all their efforts with the "HD" modeling, it seems that it's all focused on the tonality (typical line6) but no attention was paid to the response of the Fender models. To me, their amp models all feel static and are very strange and uncomfortable to play.

Totally Agree...I have enjoyed only one tone on the Pod HD500 that I downloaded at custom tone its called STRAT-PC. It has snappy response and almost a cool volume knob jockeyed vibe when you pick lightly. However, for 499$ I would think that more than one preset should do ya right!!! Having said that, I do give mega props to POD HD500 id you are in the studio and looking for strong effects. Top notch stuff there!

My Mustang Floor was delayed in delivery, so hoping it arrives today. Once here, I will A-B it with POD since Ive had the pod for close to a year.
