Please someone confirm that my new arriving Mustang III V.2's XLR out WILL NOT be muted when connected to a PA system...
I hope I am right...

Thanks

No, the speaker is not muted. It's just like having a direct box.

Is there an option to mute or lower the speaker volume when using the xlr outs?

Yes, but does that alter the XLR line out level, or is there a separate control for that?

Hi Harmonious,
you can set the master volume knob to minimum (even 1) because you can control the level of XLR outputs by separate parameter in Utility Menu.. you have to find Line out boost after "memory lock".

Last reply in this thread said turn the master volume down to reduce volume when using line out (XLR) for DI. That also knocks out the signal for the line out. So how do you mute the speaker but keep the line out signal strong? I set the line out boost in Utilities to max but that doesn't work when the master volume is off or low. I want a good DI into my recording interface with NO sound coming out of the amp itself. Is there a hidden mute button or something?

You've asked the same question in three topics, I'll answer it just once here (as an aside, no need for multiple posts with the same question; any topic you post in gets 'bumped' to the top of the list so everyone sees it).

The Mustang's physical Master Volume knob does NOT affect the fx-send volume. I just tried it on my amp to be certain of this. The Master Volume knob only affects the Mustang's power amp (ie the Mustang's own speakers and possibly also headphones output), which comes after the fx-loop.

However, the virtual "master volume" control on some of the amp models will affect the volume of the fx-send signal - because that's changing the sound of the modelled amp inside the Mustang (think of it as an "amp within an amp" if that helps). Perhaps this is the control you were changing when you noticed the fx-send level change?

Do not confuse this virtual control on the modelled amp, with the Mustang's own physical Master Volume knob - they are two very different controls, doing very different things.

Finally, the Mustang has two physical volume knobs: one labelled "Volume" and one labelled "Master." Again, they do two very different things. "Master" is the physical Master Volume of the Mustang itself as above. "Volume" is used solely to adjust the relative volume of each preset - ie the output of the DSP stages. Use this to balance the volume of presets compared to each other. The level set with this knob will affect the fx-send. In particular note that this "Volume" control does not affect the tone/sound - it doesn't correspond to a volume control on the modelled amp for example.

So, your sequence of actions should be something like this:
- Select the amp model you want, and adjust its settings using the amp's virtual knobs (ie the big knob and LCD displays, or FUSE) until you have the tone/sound you desire
- Use the Mustang's "Volume" knob to adjust the overall volume of this sound, compared to other presets*
- Save this preset so you don't lose these settings
- Adjust the XLR output level (and USB output level etc) to provide a suitable input volume to your PA equipment, computer, etc
- Adjust the Mustang's physical Master Volume so that the amp's own speaker is at the level you want, either as a stage monitor, or to fill the room, or silent, etc.
- You may then have to repeat the whole process to fine-tune the settings as the initially-created sounds may feel a little different once you've set all the volume levels (but you can't set the volumes first until you've created approximately the right sounds, so there's no quick solution to this - the type of sound and its volume depend on each other)

* You should do this while listening to the sound through the main equipment you'll be using - whether that's the house PA, the amp's own speaker, a computer connection, etc. Due to the different responses each of these will give, you'll probably find you need to balance the levels across your presets differently for each type of output device. Some people actually create two (or more) sets of identical presets precisely for this reason - they just balance the levels of one set for a PA, and the other set for the amp's own speaker, possibly a third set for headphones practice use, etc.

Thanks Scott-UK. I thought I had already considered exactly what you said, but I didn't think it fully through. After a more thorough analysis I was able to accomplish what I wanted - i.e., control the volume on the line out through my AI and DAW while turning the master volume on the amp to zero and muting the amp speaker. Operator error - duh. My apologies. Thanks also for the info on how the forum works.

Excellent reply Scott-UK - exactly what I was searching for.

Thanks!
