The salesperson who sold me my Mustang 1 said I could record to the computer with it. I didn't see anything about it in the instructions... how do I go about doing this?

Hello Jack.
Congrats on your new amp.
Your amp should have came with a disc that has the necessary links for downloading Ableton live LE(recording software), Amplitude Fender LE( amp sim software), and Fender ASIO ( Computer to amp I/O).
If the disc wasn't included the ASIO is here: http://www.fender.com/support/articles/ ... -downloads

The advanced owners guide is here: http://support.fender.com/manuals/guita ... nglish.pdf

Not sure how to get the other dowloads without the disc. I'm sure someone else will chime with the right knowledge.

Once you have the needed ASIO and recording software ,it is as simple as connecting the amp to the computer via USB and starting the software.
There is somewhat of a learning curve, but post up questions and someone will always help you out.

Also, if you want to start with some recording software that's a little simpler than the included Ableton software, you can download Audacity for free  Audacity Download

It cuts the learning curve down a little, but it's not quite as advanced as the Ableton software. Here's an example recording, I made this in Audacity using backing tracks: My Demo As stated above, the amp is connected to the computer via USB to record the lead track.

Fender no longer supply a disc with the amps - it's all done with downloads etc.

Go to fuse.fender.com and click on the "Check If Your Amp Qualifies for Free Third Party Software" and "Learn How to Record Directly From Your Amp to a Computer" links for full details on how to obtain the software, obtain licence keys for it, and how to use it.

Question about the Amplitube software it comes with.

Can this be used to load a preset on the amp itself?

and/or

Can this be installed and used as an insert plugin in Protools (PT9 particularly)

Thanks very much.

No. Use FUSE to load a preset onto the amp (and edit the preset, etc).
