This is an example of a recording made through the Mustang III amp's USB port:

http://youtu.be/wveINTAwdzg

I've seen a lot of reports about "fizz" on the V1 amps, and I'm not sure what you are talking about. My guess is you are referring to cpu noise. I've experienced it, but you can minimize it by keeping computer a few feet away from the amp and keeping the guitar away from the computer while recording. It is all about signal-to-noise ratio.

This recording used a Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster for the rhythm track and the clean lead. It was played through the 65 Twin Reverb amp model (I rarely use any of the stock presets for anything other than a starting point for my own presets). It used vintage tremolo (on the lead), small hall reverb and stereo tape delay.

The over-driven lead features a Les Paul played through the British 60s amp model, with additional gain and the overdrive stomp effect. It also used stereo echo filter delay and large hall reverb.

The rhythm track was actually a 4-bar, 15 second loop on a Ditto Looper pedal, placed in the effects loop (sorry, V2 owners, you don't get on-board effects that way, from what I've read). I had to record the looper using my Behringer USB mixer, since the effects loop doesn't appear on the USB output (what's up with that, Fender?). I just let the looper play for a little over 4 minutes as I recorded it. The Ditto Looper actually had two layers - the rhythm guitar (Strat on neck pickup) and a second layer where I just played a single chord on the Strat for each measure, but used a Dunlop volume pedal to fade it in after strumming the chord. It gave it a kind of steel guitar sound.

I used the obsolete Adobe Audition 3 software to make the recordings, since that is what I'm used to (I hated the Live 8 software that was bundled with the amp). I guess whatever you are used to will work, and I could have used Live 8.

Surf and gull sounds came from some sound effects CDs.

I've been very impressed with the quality of recordings I've been able to get via the USB interface. I'm just glad I bought my Mustang III before the V2 model came out, since the V2 isn't very looper-friendly.

I also used a Visual Sound Comp 66 Compressor. I realize the Mustangs have some decent compressors, but they are just too hard to access while playing live (I often need to make changes between songs & guitars). Besides, the Comp 66 has a nice tone switch that I used to sweeten the Strat's tone.

Hi JosephREllis, I have to check out the recording when I get home later.

As far as the 'fizz' issue, the general consensus seems to be that it is a problem with the power amp (and occurs when the amp is not connected to a computer), so it would seem the CPU noise you are referring to is a separate issue.

Nice recording. I feel like going to the beach now.

The fizz, if you have it, will be only through the Mustang speaker (not phones out, not usb, not fx-send) and of the tones you use in that recording, the only one that could possibly show fizz is the cleanest one (twin?). The fizz require single note playing, mostly on 5th and 6th string to show up, and even then, maybe the twin is too bright to show it, the champ emulation would be more prone to it. You may conclude the fizz is more an academic rarity than anything else and you would agree with most users then :)

I agree the USB recording is good, if a bit too hi-fi to my bluesy/jazzy taste :)

Thanks for your recording, Joseph. Got my morning coffee and listened to your music. Great way to start the day.

I do not have the LP, but I do have an Amn Dlx wih the N3s and a Mustang IV V1. I have yet to record and I am presently looking to add a looper as well, so your comment about V2 not being in the same camp is a re-enforcement of my concern. As for the fizz issue, I haven't found it to be a problem to stop me from using a great amp (especially for the price).

Enjoyed the photos too. Reminded me of when I lived on an island in the Pacific. Sometimes we overlook our current surroundings and neglect to take pictures. Mind you, it is always nice to check out those exotic locations.:-)

Cheers.

I highly recommend a looper pedal. I've barely scratched the surface of what I can do with mine, but it has already proved to be a great tool for creativity. It also is forcing me to work on my timing. The Ditto Looper from TC Electronic is a good basic "play right out of the box" model, but you might want to hold out for a more advanced looper, depending on what your future needs are. I do know a guy who has one of those loopers with all the bells and whistles, though, and he has yet to use it because it is too complicated.

I'm looking for length of recording and storage to have recalls available at a later date, likely with a memory card; however, I usually prefer the KISS principle too. As usual, any added desired feature with digital brings kitchen sink features simply because they can. I think we can all relate to features that go unused from lack of need or learning curves so your point is a good one.

I have a professional tech background, but even I get swamped from information overload. Sometimes directions are written from an engineer's point of view and it gets lost when the user has to decode them. Sometimes foreign translations are limiting, and sometimes the instructions are poor or missing pertinent information. Most often it comes down to using the equipment long enough and thorough enough to discover the pluses and minuse. At times it's a crap shoot.

Your looper's sound and effect has been put to good use, Joseph, as is evident from your music.

Keep creating. It's workin' :-)

Thanks, all. I'll be posting new songs at http://www.JosephREllis.com, which points to my SoundCloud page. They will get posted here, before anywhere else.

I'm working on an original "real" surf rock tune, now. I'm not using the looper pedal for this one, but I am using a (very fast) drum loop.

Okay, I made a video for Stinger using some more public domain surfing images: http://youtu.be/Nf4UmwM600o
