Better off spending the extra $30? My hunch is yes but always welcome some input.

Thanks!

Most of the main issues/comparisons between th V1 and v2 amps aren't relevant for the Mustang I (eg fizz, XLR out, effects loop placement, etc), so your decision should be "simply":

- Do you want/need the extra amp models and effects that come with the V2 amps?

If you do, buy the V2; if you don't, the V1 is a perfectly capable amp. Related to this, the V2 amps are likely to have more (and for a longer time) firmware updates in the future, compared to the V1 amps.

The visual appearance of the amps is also different; this shouldn't sway your decision too much on a piece of equipment you're buying for its sound, but some/most people prefer the look of the V1 amps.

The v2 has a few different presets and Fx, most are on Fuse I think, as the panel displays the same ones as v1. Different, not necessarily better. You'll end up tweaking all of them anyway, even if it's just turning off the multiple FX - a good number of the factory presets are just awful, same as on the v1.

for $78 the v1 is a steal. I'd have grabbed one for that.

I recently designed and built a small combo amp (5 watts) from scratch, using the cheapest components known to man and I spent more than 80$ (around 90$)
I never wanted a M1 but that for price I'm ready to buy one right away. Where did you get that price?

I had a V1 Mustang I.
Got a V2 Mustang II instead.
Happy with the II, but missed the I, so
I just got another V1 M I, used, very cheaply.
The extras on V2 are barely significant, and I can't
compare V1 and V2 on either model, but I think
there's something special about that little V1 Mustang I.
FUSE allows you to move presets between the V1 and V2,
it compensates for missing models etc. Not perfect, but
it's great they bothered. Happy as a clam tonight.

I have a MI v1 and never ever thought to replace it for a MI v2. The MI v1 is a keaper. Will never get rid of it. Absolutly great for late night pratice and home recordings (miked, never liked it usb'ed in the DAW). I have a bunch of good tube amps (Marshall, Vox, Fender) and no can really compete with the Mustang I in terms of versatility. The next logical step for me would be a III v2.

78$ for a Mustang I IS a great price, if eveything is fine with the amp for sure. Go for it!

Keep your 30$ for strings, pics or other accessories.

Yes,i also agree with stratquebec,i will always keep my MI,there really is something special about this amp,i just recently had a problem with the latest firmware update because i did not have the newest version of fuse and my effects in the amp and in fuse were all messed up but i solved the problem by going back to a previous firmware update and doing a factory reset on my mustang I.

This is going to sound crazy but after the factory reset my mustang I sounds better to me somehow! Maybe i forgot how some of the original factory presets sounded with and without effects? It is not that all the factory presets sounded good but i thought the high gain metal ones sounded very good to me and i tweaked some to my liking and added some effects with chorus, delay and reverb for my shredding guitar practice time and i just cannot put my guitar down now!

The effects also sound better to me then the ones in my mustang V! I know this does not make much sense but maybe it is because i play my MI and low volumes in my bedroom and i play my MV at much louder volumes in my basement studio? I never liked the reverbs that much in my MV but for some reason the reverbs sound good in my MI?

My mustang I is the best sounding modeling amp that i have at low volumes for the high gain metal tones that i like when i practice,i also have the line 6 spider III 15,G-DEC 3 15 and vypyr 15 that i use for practice amps but i like my mustang I better at lower volumes and even at higher volumes the MI sounds good!

Maybe the MI will be sought after in the future for being a great sounding modeling amp just like the original Ibanez tube screamer is now? Just think how lucky you were to get your MI for $100 and in the future about 10 years from now the price will be about $500!

This may not be so far fetched because the cost of silver is very high now and there are shortages in the world market for all electronic devices that have silver in their main boards and most of them do have it!

[later] now i'm comparing side by side, and can't put my
finger on what's happening. I've loaded up both with the
same presets, using the same guitar. Somehow the V1 M I
rings with a subtlety that on the V2 M II hardly ever happens.
Could it be that to get rid of the fizz they rounded off some of
the detail?

@Metalman50, I just realized something essential that might explain
a lot of what we're hearing, including your factory presets suddenly
sounding so much better. It takes but the slightest change in
the angle at which you are facing the speaker to change the
way a preset sounds. Dramatically. To really compare, you have
to place the two amps like stereo near-field monitors, so they
are exactly at the same angle to your ears. Then the two amps
sound much more alike. I'm still not sure of other details, but
this explains (for me anyaway) some of the inconsistencies.

all the mustangs I tried are incredibly directional, I guess the closed back ones are even more.
Another tip to compare both amps, I take as a rule of thumb that to really get all sounds from a speaker you need to be AT LEAST one feet away from the amp per inch in diameter of the speaker. in other words, 8 feet away from the Mustang 1 and 12 feet away from the mustang 2

You will immediately notice that sound is richer if you step away from any speaker following this concept.

In the end if I had one summary thing to say, it's that the differences are within the limits of my mood, distance to my ears, and the placebo effect; these models are very very similar.

These things are so subtle. Just moving them around in the room changes how they sound. When you compare an amp with your recollection of another, it's way way too hard to be accurate.

There is something nice about the boxiness of the M I, it sounds more like "a vintage amp", it's the speaker and enclosure, and I think that for recording I'd pick the M I. But adding a little midrange to the same patch on the M II makes it about the same.

Congrats on the new Mustang III V.2, jedi! You'll be busy with that for awhile, but I thought I would let you know that yesterday I saw about twenty cartons of Mustang I V.1's stacked outside the entrance to my local Best Buy music store, priced at $78. Didn't bother to check on the Mustang II price.

wow, that is INDEED a steal. I'm about to pull the trigger on one of these. Quick question for the MI users (both v1 and v2) how is the fuzz on these things? i like that the MI v2 has the Big Fuzz which i assume is a Big Muff model. Is the Big Fuzz available on the MI v2 or is that for the higher priced mustangs? I mostly play Gilmourish type stuff and got some nice tones from my GT6 but looking for a change and this looks perfect for knocking around on in the Family room and getting the kids into playing.

Also, British Watt looks like its only available on the III and higher correct?

according to this: http://www.fender.com/series/mustang/mustang-i-v2/ (see specs) it has the same effects as the other mustangs v2.

The big fuzz sounds much much better than the original fuzz stomp. Look on youtube for a mustang v2 official demo (not the NAMM demos), particularly when they play using a preset called "pigs can fly"

Thanks,

I have a serious case of $@! right now. Amp Selection Syndrome. I’ll likely go with the Mustang ii V2 so I can get the extra watts and bigger speaker but the only reservation I have is not having all the tone controls right there on the amp and from what I can tell, it looks like I can’t turn any overdrive or fuzz off and on without it being hooked up to a computer at least til I’ve programmed everything to my liking.

Was tossing around the idea of the Fronman 25R or another small one trick pony to go with my GT6 I’ve spent a long time programming which would allow me to upgrade the front end later…but then I don’t get the versatility of the Mustang.

Gear Purchasing Psychiatry… that is an occupational field waiting to burst.
