I would suggest a Mustang I. I had a V1 M I, and got a V2 M II instead, mainly because I wanted the 12" so I could practice bass on it too. And that's fine. But there was something about the M1 I liked better.

The M II is heavier to move from room to room, and the tone is clearer but more abrasive. I haven't tried the V2 M I, but I sure miss that little V1 M I. They are PLENTY loud enough for home use, and something about the hardware, speaker and driver gives it a rich and mellow tone. The fact I could so easily carry it with a guitar to another room, up and down stairs, was another benefit. I think the M III will be hard to get best results with for you at bedroom levels, though if you haven't tried a M I, you won't know the difference.

As to V2, in reality there's nothing all that significant added in the V2 version for M I and M II. I'm thinking of picking up a used V1 M I.

Now if for you the little LCD screen on the M III + is worth all the extra money, OK. I've set up my basic models/tones in FUSE, and treat it as a variable personality amp. I set any appropriate effects in a preset and turn them to 0 before saving, and then I can tweak it enough from the M I / M II panel. I imagine getting side-tracked into actually editing on that little screen would be just a total time-drain. Having all the storage and screen real estate with a PC makes it manageable.

Actually, it isn't that bad, Ferd. The LCD controls are roughly the size of a stompbox control panel, anyway. The extra buttons and such are located logically and conveniently, either right blow it, or right alongside the big knob ( the data wheel). They even light up to show you they're active, or to remind you to press it to save your changes.

If you're of the computer generation, it might be a tad awkward at first- like using a friggin computer to adjust the amp is to us old farts!

Soundwise, the III is also an open backed cabinet, so it spreads the sound around more, and sounds more open. Honestly- it really does sound great at bedroom levels.

You also get an fx loop, which is a rarity in a modeller already loaded with fx. ( my TC Corona and Flashback, and my Boss Flanger currently live there)

I'm seriously considering adding a V2 to my arsenal. The HiWatt model, and the expanded range of dirt pedal options is very attractive. I don't care that much for the V1's overdrive stomp. I'd be keeping the V1. I'd like to run them in stereo using one of my pedals. Imagine the "2 Champs running in stereo" preset- in stereo!

Thanks for all the help so far!

As I am mainly going to use the amp at bedroom levels and don't need all the power, I still am going for the Mustang III V2. The speaker in the III is of a better quality then that of the II model, but if I will hear the difference at low levels?

Anyway, the GUI on the III is a big advantage over the II and I will not always need my pc to tweak and adjust all the settings. It's all easily done on the amp itself.

Only thing I am still a bit afraid of is the power. I will have to trust on the fact that it will sound ok at bedroom levels.

Going to order this amp online and hopefully be a happy owner of a Mustang III.

On other forums some people didn't recommend this amp. Instead I should buy a Peavey Vypyr or a Vox (not sure which model) or a used Tech21 30?

I am definitely going for the Mustang because it such a versatile amp. I keep you all posted and keep you updated as soon as I have the opportunity to test the amp.

I'm sure you won't regret it! You mentioned you like warm blues tones, well for modeling amps, Fender has set a standard in that category that the competition is still trying to catch up to. The Tech 21 is just a powered speaker cab, it requires an external unit to supply the sound. If you got the Mustang Floor, the Tech 21 would be a great way to amplify it.

I think you'll be happy with sound of the Celestion speaker with open back cab. Plus the option to expand as your needs change will always be there. Not only do you have the effects loop but the ability add up to 6 foot control switches and an expression pedal. Well worth it for a small investment in my opinion.

Yesterday I ordered the Mustang III v2 and received it today. That's really fast!!! I am from the Netherlands and ordered this amp from Bax Shop.

First short impression of this amp:

I love it! 8) Sounds really good at bedroom levels. Especially the clean sounds I really like! Tomorrow I am going to hook it up to my pc and use Fuse. Some clean presets have that lovely warm blues sound which I like.
Only thing that concerns me are the cheap plastic headphone/aux connectors. They don't look real reliable.
Sounds also fantastic through the headphones!

One happy owner of a Fender Mustang III

Congrats, Nick!

I've read several other comments about the plastic jack sockets too. I haven't really given it much thought. My guess/assumption is that, as an affordable amp ways of keeping production costs low are imperative. Apparently, the jack sockets were one place they economized.

When I demo'd a V2 in my local store, I ended up being mightily impressed by the Pigs can Fly ( or whatever the hell it's called) preset. With the master on 3, I could actually FEEL it moving air! Sounded killer, too. Whoever created that one really got it in the Dave Gilmour ball park.

I'm still partial to Bassman Drive. With a middy OD pedal, set just to barely crunch. Brings a smile to my face every time! ( what is it with so many guitar players and their hatred/fear of midrange anyhow?) I use regular physical OD pedals with my Musty, mainly because I HAVE them.

Glad you already got it, and that it works well for you. For people trying to decide, I think it's worth mentioning the M1, because it's a lot cheaper, half the weight of a M III, and IMHO does a surprisingly good job at home levels, i.e. it's not a "little toy".

I imagine the jacks are soldered right onto the main circuit board, for ease of manufacturing, and the give/flexibility of plastic is actually a plus in that scenario. They'll probably be fine until after the relevant warranty coverage expires, and then you can add/replace with whatever type of jack you prefer. If I were that worried about it, I'd tack solder some leads onto the existing socket pads and mount some metal jacks, but why hurry?

See this topic for others' suggestions on this. The two common approaches are to fit a short 'flying lead' to avoid strain on the amp socket, or replace the sockets with metal ones.

Several of us have already suggested to Fender that they consider making a "Pro" or "Studio" version of the Mustang, with higher-quality components such as metal jacks, etc. It seems the general opinion is that people would be willing to pay a bit more for such a version of the amp to cover the cost of the better parts.

Because it looks a bit fragile I doubt if it lasts long. We'll see. If not, I can change it anyway with a better quality.

Man, I gigged with my MI mic'd with an 8 piece horn band. It's a very capable little amp.

O.

I didn't had much time to play with my new amp, but in the short time I tried out some presets..

This amp is really awesome 8) !!!!!! Today I hooked it up with my pc and Fuse and downloaded some presets. Love those crunchy warm blues presets!

I am glad I bought the Mustang III. The better speaker gives it a nice bottom end even with low volumes.
What a big difference with my older Peavey Bandit 112. My guitars comes really alive with the Mustang.

Love those emulated tube amp distortion sounds!!!

Yes, you are correct. I had a problem login into my account for downloading the Fuse presets. Changed both usernames for the Fender forum and for Fuse. After changing this I discovered that I used my display name to log in instead of my username. I think I'll will change it again to both Nick_66.

Yes, I really love this amp! Some presets I can play on volume setting 2 or 3 and not annoying the neighbors, at least I think so. Still haven't had complaints from them :D
