Hi, ya'll. I have finally gotten my two sisters into playing guitar, and my youngest one wants to buy a guitar of her own (a used BC Rich Mockingbird Pro X2 for $400). The problem with this is that she won't have enough money for an amp afterward (and she has her heart set on this guitar, folks. No way of changing her mind.), and even if she did, there wouldn't be money for effects (she's into metal and hard rock, so we're talking lots of distortion.). So, I figured she could use my amp.

I've been doing some reading and the "Y" connector seems the easiest (and least expensive) way to share amps and play at the same time for practice and teaching reasons. I was wondering what opinions I might run into here, and if anyone would know of pros or cons of doing this with a Fender Mustang 1 or if there is a better alternative to buying another $100 amp.

I appreciate your time for reading this, and I hope you can help me. Thanks in advance.

-K

Hi,
what you suggest will work but has some drawbacks. Both guitars "impedance" will affect each other regards "top end treble response" and loss of volume.
On top of that your individual volume/tone controls will have an effect on the others guitar as well, but like I said will work with those limitations in mind!

Maybe buy a small "buffer" mixer like a cheap Behringer and use that to balance the loads before running into the amp? Without getting into impedance matching this will at least give both guitars their own control "pre".
:)

Did anybody tell this young woman that her guitar choice is really ugly?

Ha, you made me laugh clown laugh. An unfortunate looking instrument. Pity it doesn't have a pointy headstock to add extra agita. Ah, youth.

proguitartrax - Thanks for your advice. I appreciate it.

You two - A bit rude? Besides, what should it matter to you? No one's asking you to play it, or even look at it. Go be yourselves somewhere you're wanted. I don't appreciate your comments.

It works fine. Of course the two guitars will be somewhat interdependent, but so what? Just set the volume a little higher on the amp and back off on the guitar volume controls, then balance as required. A little mixer would give them a chance to better set tone and level, but whether it's worth the money is up to you. For kids to practice, I wouldn't think so, until they get pretty good anyway.
