I'm still experimenting, and I'm not totally sure this is going to work, but I think I'm onto something. A lot of people have been dissapointed that the Mustang II isn't loud enough to gig. I have a big Marshall and a big Mesa Boogie, so I know what to compare it to. After a lot of tweaking and some dissapointing results on gigs, I think I finally found an answer.

Basically like every amp, the Mustang has a preamp and a poweramp right? So if you send your effects in the input and customize your amp modeling, and/or use their preamp stomp boxes, you'll have a nice sound, but not enough power for the poweramp.

The key is to use the effects loop effects Post-Gain effects, especially the overdrive. The amp is really just limiting itself if you don't, because it provides all the power anyway. I started putting this in my presets, and it suddenly became much louder than my original presets. I haven't tested it on a gig yet, but I just had the thing on 5 and it was quite loud.

It's much harder to get a good Post-Gain sound with overdrive/distortion than the clean or slightly crunchy sounds.

So basically I have my 2 favorite amp models cranked on volume and gain on 3, and the post-gain all the way up on 10, with gain on 4, and I use it with a real distortion pedal for distortion.

This will keep your preamp from cracking up, and will allow you to keep the Master lower, because I find it gets squirrly once it's about at 7.

Any thoughts? Ideas? Anecdotes?

You may want to try putting a compressor stomp on the post amp position, level to max and experiement with the other kbos, you will get even more drive with even less distortion, even the princeton emulation becomes giggable that way.

Most of the factory presets are indeed over-effected and too quiet. My core presets are all louder than the factory ones. The trick is to find a new normal that works across the board.

The Post Gain Ranger is a godsend, not just for volume, it also expands the range of what a model can do. The Simple Compressor is indeed also very useful. Too bad you can't have both on at once, but there are other "effects" that have Level range and can be used in the Post Loop just as a gain block.

The factory speaker is pretty good, but not all that efficient. Replacing the speaker with a more efficient one is sort of economically self-defeating, but if you have one ....

Adding a 1/4" "external Speaker" jack on the back wall would allow using a more efficient external cabinet when one's available for gigs.

I've been trying, but haven't found any modules that could be used to raise level except the ones in the group with Ranger and the Compressor. That includes all the overdrive modules as well. And only one of those can be used at once? Too bad. Can't apply get a compressor AND an overdrive, for instance. And only Wah appears in two groups.

I do wish that instead of those silly manuals (one of which consists of the same 2 pages in multiple languages, and a software (FUSE) manual that attempts to cover several amps in one document (WHY??)), Fender paid someone to put together some more in-depth documentation specific to each model, and covering all the controls, including the knobs on the stomps etc, as well as characteristics of each amp model. In this time of easily edited documents, and all the people with brains, this measly offering is inexcusable.

Thanks fellas. I'll try the compressor.
I think the reason you can't put the same effect group on both sides is that their software only allows one instance of each type.

I have to turn the master volume up to nearly 8 to cut through, but it does work. I'm a blues guy, so I don't use the high gain amp models, just the Bassman, Tweed, and Super Sonic channels. The rest are useless for my style, but all of them are loud enough.

Someone mentioned that the distorted amps were not as loud. I think that with such sounds, when the spectrum is wider, the total amount of energy is the same but the subjective impression, in any given part of the spectrum, is quieter. To make them "cut through the mix", use the controls to emphasize a specific band.

What's a "Ranger"? I've never seen that in Fuse.
