Hi,

I have a USB recording interface with 2 XLR inputs (1 with HZ). Is it possible to connect XLR out of Mustang III v2 to these inputs for recording. Mustang XLR says line level, but I am not sure if I connect to the sound card (USB) if it will break the system.

Pl advise

Do the XLR inputs on your USB recording interface say whether they are "line level" or "microphone level" or perhaps give their voltage sensitivity?

If they're "line level" you should be fine. If they're "microphone level" then yes there could be a problem. It may not break anything but you could overdrive the inputs.

You could start with the amp volume on zero, then slowly turn it up until you get an acceptable sound level through the computer without distortion. Then you just have to remember not to turn it up any higher than that while connected to the USB recording interface!

mgr2009: If you have input volumn controls on your interface (most do) you should probably set them to zero as well (along with scott-uk's advice) and work your way up.

Unbalanced Outputs
The Mustang Floor provides unbalanced outputs for connection to
mono or stereo amplifiers or a combination of sound equipment.
Use the utility menus (see Utility Menus, page 7) to adjust the
mixing and voicing of the signals sent from these jacks. Use the
LEVEL knob to adjust the output level to accommodate the input
sensitivity of outboard equipment and avoid unwanted signal
distortion.

XLR Outputs
The Mustang Floor provides XLR outputs for connection to
soundboards and recording equipment when a low signalto-
noise ratio is required. Use the LEVEL knob to adjust the
output level to accommodate the input sensitivity of outboard
equipment. Use the utility menus (see Utility Menus, page 7)
to adjust the mixing and voicing of the signals sent from these
jacks. Press the GROUND LIFT button IN to disconnect the ground
connection which may reduce line noise in some situations.
Normally leave this button in the OUT position.

It is not Mustang floor, I am talking about Fender Mustang III V2 guitar amplifier. The manila does not say anything about sensitivity.

-20 dBu is about 0.077 volts RMS. This is less than line-level. However, note there are two different line-levels: consumer (home recording) and professional (studio recording). I don't know which the Mustangs use. Consumer line level is 0.316 volts RMS and pro is 1.23 volts RMS.

You may be better using the TRS (1/4" jack) inputs on your device, they can cope with +4dBu which is about 1.2 volts RMS. That is, it looks to me as though the XLR inputs on yorur device are intended for microphones, and the TRS sockets are intended for pro line-level. Note each TRS socket appears to carry a balanced mono signal (not a stereo signal).

If you do use the XLR sockets, you probably want to turn off the phantom DC voltage.

Hi Guys,

Firstly, thanks to both strings10927 and scott-uk for their contributions here. I wanted to chime in and add a note of clarification. Most full service music stores (depending on the size and region, etc.) will carry XLR to 1/4" TRS cables. This may be the bast way to go in regard to connecting the Fender® Mustang™ III (V.2) via the XLR outputs to your Roland/Edirol interface and keep things balanced (always good). And mgr2009, it looks like the guys have offered you a good amount of useful information. But please let us know if we can assist further.

Best Regards,

Alan
