That piece of information may become handy one day.

Honestly I agree on the power thing, I have a M3 and I never play at volume more than 2.5 or I risk the wife sabotaging my amp.

Hi rubbersoul67,
Apparently i am one of the few that (about 1 and half year ago) received a Mustang 3 Vers. 1 in replacement to the first one, and after few weeks realized that was (or was became) fizzy also that second amp.

My experience seems to be different compared to most customers because after the latest firmware update (i think 1.10) i didn't have problem anymore on the clean tones but the annoying fizz still appeared in overdriven tones after the attack of single notes sustained.. that means in Santana's songs for example. It was a kind of phaser-like effect that even modulated in some way the sustained notes or better similar to a beat when the string is out of tune. So, I wouldn't say it was just a subtle background effect under the main tone. And that unwanted effect to me was unacceptable. Of course it was more hearable in the 6th and 5th string notes and became very little audible as the note frequency went higher..
And i didn't have (and i don't have at today) that effect using the same (tuned) guitar on a emulation software like Guitar Rig or Amplitube so the problem wasn't in my guitar or its old vintage pickups (humbuckers with coil tap switches) like i could thought.

So in my experience i would say that could happen that the fizz is there also using some overdriven tones and some playing styles with a lot of sustained low notes like Carlos does.. or other melodic styles like Gilmour one.. but with chords strumming and other fast playing styles i think it could be ok because strumming, fast scales.. hide the underlying possible fizz.

I have the opportunity to purchase a like new MIII for $150 on CL. I don't know if I should go for it or not. I will be able to play it and check for the "fizz". If it is "fizz-free" I think I will be happy with not having the extra models/effects of the v.2. I am not exactly sure what I am asking here...... maybe this....

Should I take a chance on this if it's "fizz-free" or avoid the v.1 altogether.

Also can someone please give me some quick advice on how to exactly check for the "fizz". (I know I saw this somewhere here, but it is now lost in a sea of posts)

I normally play thru a Mustang Floor/FRFR and am considering getting the MIII to use at my rehearsal space (leaving it there) rather than drag my whole rig to rehearsal each time (keeping my main rig at home for daily use/writing/etc). Using the MIII IMO will give me something close to my usually tone rather than just getting some other non-modelling two-channel amp. Also, the MIII gives me a little bit of "consitant back-up" so to speak for my main rig (again as opposed to having something way different as a back-up).

It is quite possible I am looking for someone to talk me out of this (not really sure), LOL.

I also have the opportunity to get a very well taken care of Fender Stage 160 (2-channel/pre-dsp) for $200. Opinios about this are welcome as well.

Thanks in advance as I have a few days before I have to decide I thought someone here may have some sage advice for me,

Bill

$150 clams is a dang good price for a like-new MIII. I actually got mine off CL used as well. I paid quite a bit more than that.

Frankly, I'd call that worth it. I tend to think that the whole noise issue is way overblown anyway. If one has to set the amp to a specific never-used-in-real-life setting to hear it, where's the issue? The amp produces many wonderful sounds, and I like my cleans ( an area that's supposed to be hardest hit by the issue).

I'd say take it for a test drive. If you like the way it sounds, buy it! For that price it's a steal.

As for the V2 upgrades, only you can decide that. Sure it's cool having an Orange and a Hi Watt amp emulations, some extra fx and an XLR, but is that worth an extra $250+ to you? I recently tried out a V2, and loved the HiWatt model. I just can't justify spending $400+ on another MIII JUST for that, though. ( no need/use for an XLR, and I already own several good OD pedals, and don't have a need for the other new fx either.)

If you don't already have an MIII, and are willing to part with the asking price of a new
V2, go for it. They are definitely worth the money. $150 for a V1 is hard to pass up, though!

Edit: FWIW, the power rating of the MIII is beside the point. The real reason to go for it, over the I and II, is the greatly expanded user interface. You can tweak and edit everything from the amp itself, whereas with the others, you need Fuse and a computer to do a lot of it. Plus, you get all 12 /17 amp models, 99 user assignable presets, a larger, better speaker, an fx loop, and a 2 button footswitch.
