while updating the Firmware for my new Mustang Mini, I had a power outage, and now the amp is 'dead' ... turned on, it flashes the red 'SAVE' button, and will not allow installation of the upgrade, it just 'stops' loading the upgraded firmware about 20% into the process ... no luck, so far, reaching Fender by phone ... any suggestions ? (I am computer-savvy, BTW) - I have also tried the 'solutions' mentioned elsewhere, no help

I (and several other people) have actually had this exact problem happen right out of the box without a power outage. My Firmware update just hung at 20%. I had no choice but to shutdown FUSE. After that I had the dreaded blinking Save button.

I "solved" this based on information I found in another post: I had to use a different computer (I went from my desktop to my laptop) to install it. Something to do with possible USB incompatibility. It worked when I installed FUSE on the laptop and did the upgrade from there.

I would suggest you do the same if possible, or maybe uninstall FUSE from your computer and start from scratch (reinstall and try again).

Quite frankly I'm really perturbed that a factory reset from the amp itself doesn't fix this problem. That's unacceptable, but it is what it is.

Good luck. I haven't heard any other solution to this problem yet. I didn't have to contact Fender though, so maybe they have a better workaround.

thanks for your response, but I have tried all those options, and more - just got off the phone with FENDER Customer Service - says I have to ship it to them for repair, can't fix it myself, even though I'm a computer tech - sucks, now I'm out Shipping charges on a brand-new amp

Yeah... that's just not right. It's like getting a Windows update and discovering it breaks your computer to the point where you can't even re-install Windows.

The factory reset should fix ANYTHING. I don't care if it wipes out all my presets or whatever, at least the amp would work.

They really dropped the ball here.

I do not know if you tried this, but if you power up you amp with the tap-tunner button pressed, the amp will start in a diagnostics mode. If you don't even get to that point I would say your amp is fried. Otherwise in that mode you have some control indicators that may hint to the problem.

Hi ScaryTone, a software update and a firmware update are 2 very different things.

Without going into too much boring detail, I can tell you this ... when I update the Firmware on my $6000 backup tape autoloader at work, I'd better have it hooked up to a battery backup, because if the power goes out during the update, I will end up with a $6000 paper weight.

many modern gizmos (including my cheap point and shoot camera) include a safe fail back mechanism for firmware recovery, which works more or less like this:

-as part of the firmware upgrade, the first thing the gizmo does is to backup a copy of the existing firmware (known to be good) to a backup flash memory
-there's an internal flag set in that backup flash too that indicates if the firmware update has completed successfully or not
-when the actual firmware update starts the flag is cleared and only set again if the actual firmware is totally copied and a checksum passes, otherwise (for example if loose power) the flag remains clear
-first thing the gizmo does when it boots (bootloader, which is not normally part of the firmware update) is to check if the "succesfull firmware update flag " is set or not, if it does not, the backup firmware is copied from the backup flash and everybody is happy

of course, this requires an extra 2$ cost for the backup flash to hold the failsafe firmware image that not every vendor is willing to spend. (2$ is an overstatement in the case of the mustangs where the firmware update is 250kbytes long, so is probably more like 25 cents)

Dear Fender, would you please consider this for the V3 of the Mustangs? we have seen in this forum alone abundant proof that things may and will go wrong during firmware updates.

PS: by the way, other amp manufacturers are no better, in the case of peavey they instruct Vypyr owners to perform the firmware upgrades via the horribly slow and unreliable MIDI interface of the amp... and if it fails (which often does) is not covered by warranty! LOL

True enough strings, I understand the differences between software and firmware updates but your point is moot. First, most of the people (like me) on this forum have had this problem without a power outage. Second, I doubt a battery backup would have been any help to anyone in this case. How would you feel if your autoloader was rendered inoperable as a result of what should be a routine firmware update provided by the company that built the thing? If Fender wants to blame the mechanism for delivery (incompatible USB) then fine, but this has happened enough where that argument is a little weak.

jedi makes the valid points. A factory reset is just that and it could be implemented such that it shouldn't fail just because the firmware update was interrupted. It should at a minimum restore the amp to an operable state. No excuses.

That being said, I love this amp.

Actually my point is on topic:
