HI,

After taking my M3 to a live gig for the first time after 15 months I own the amp, I found that ALL my bedroom presets are absolutely useless. Once confronted with bass, drums and 2 other guitars it was too thin and too harsh sounding, with way more gain than necessary. Tried to make some quick fixes on the fly as the band was playing and managed to EQ my way through the gig although no one was impressed. The guy with a week old Roland Cube 20 sounded better and fuller with the band.

I’d like to ask if anyone here who uses M3 in a live band situation will be kind to share or recommend their presets: basic clean, OD and dist tones. I play rock ’60-‘00.

I used to have this issue with my multi-fx pedals and this is part of the reason I bought the M3 in the first place.

Thanks
Robin

I don't play with a live band any more (for many years now) but I do know what you mean. Something that sounds great all by it's self may not sound so great in combination with other instruments and vice versa.

What I do when writing a preset is to have a backing track looping in the background or to rhythm section tracks in a DAW (I usually get the drums and bass sounding good together before adding anything else any way).

It's not the same as playing live but will get you a lot closer.

I'm sure that others that still play live will have more advice.

boost your mids.
learn how to change all your pre-sets manually.
turn down the gain.
build your 'sounds' from the ground up.
LEARN EVERYTHING ABOUT SAG AND BIAS AS POSSIBLE.!!!!!
use Fuse and then change it until it is very simple sounding.
play a CD very loud and screw with your pre-set, then go out of the room and play. that's what the people will hear when you play live. AND YOU WILL HEAR THE AMP AS IT REALLY SOUNDS!!!
doing this you will notice your sound is NOT cutting thru the mix.

be able to radically change your amp on the fly. (read the manual.) this VERY simple. turn a tone knob ...press SAVE. you now should be able to hear yourself and sound better in the band.
push ,say, Delay...change the amount of Delay.. press save. now Delay should sound better in the band situation.
then turn off all the "boxes" press SAVE and use the 4 button switch to turn Overdrive or Delay or Chorus on as you need it.
re-build the 1..2..and 3 pre-sets from the ground up. use the 2 button switch to get different sounds for different songs.
make sure each pre-set is the same volume and then use your volume control on your guitar to turn the amp down or up.
USE YOU GUITAR CONTROLS TO CHANGE YOUR SOUND.!!!
DO not buy front boxes!!!! buy a clean boost pedal and use it to turn up for leads ONLY.

Fuse is for recording NOT playing live.

this amp is very volume "touchy". a pre-set at a low volume is NOT going to work at a high volume.
turn up loud and walk as far away as possible then turn 4 feet to the left or right.
THAT is what your band will hear.
AND most of the time what you are going to hear.
This speaker is very directional. playing in front of it is COMPLETELY different from playing to the side.
this IS the prefect amp!!! IF you play with it and learn it inside and out.

I play it inside of my tube amp and I've got it to sound like a tube amp only better.
I've been playing for 30 years.

good luck...thanks for listening. jmb

Interestin point Michael,

I'm slowly getting out from my basement to play in small venues, and of course as you mention, sound when changing from a small room to a small-medium size venue changes because of the acoustics, PA and the fact you are playing with other people beside you.

So given that when you get to your gig, you have not three hours to correct your settings (probably 5 minutes tops), where do you normally start? tonestack? amp gain? just guitar knobs?
Do you have some sort of method to it?

Thanks for your advice.

I assumed jmb meant that if one is using a PC anyway for recording (with some recording software: ableton, audacity, whatever), then one might as well then use FUSE on the PC too for controlling the amp. Not that FUSE itself is recording software.

For playing live:
I play blues,
I've set up a pre-set for every Fender amp.
we set up in the room and I cycle thru the different amps settings until I get one that fits the venue.
then between songs I adjust the tone.
since I just use overdrive and delay and pitch shift, I can mess with those while the other guitar player takes a solo.
it's just a matter of knowing the amp perfectly.
you can do these changes very fast if you KNOW the amp. good luck...
any questions???

Thanks jmb!

As a quick fix I'll also experiment with different speaker sims until I find one that cuts thru the mix.

Building the new tone on the spot would probably be better than fixing the bad ones.

Are you sharing your presets on the fuse/community? I'd like to try them.

Thanks again
Robin

My 2 Cents. I've been useing it ( m3) live for a few months now. When tweeking it do so at higher volume levels. As said get to know the amp insideout. The bias sag controls make a huge change in sound at live levels. You can get by with the 2 button floor switch but four presets are better. Also the wah/volume is a great addon. If you do adjust settings on the fly at a gig remmember to hit the save button twice when you've got it dialed in. Thats all for now. Have fun. peace
