I'm not sure about saving modified presets or presets that I've downloaded from the Fuse community. How do I save one of these presets without overriding the one of the factory presets? Are there empty presets for me to save my own to? I just can't find out how to do it from the Advance Manual. Thanks for the help to whoever is going to answer my question.

You can save the presets to your computer, and you can load them from FUSE, but you can't save them to the amp without overwriting one of the factory presets. My understanding is that you can't overwrite the amber presets, meaning only the green and red are available for user storage.

That said, keep in mind that the majority of the factory presets are intended to showcase what the modeling can do, and will probably be of limited use.

My suggestion would be to hook up to FUSE, and save each of the factory presets to file on your computer's harddrive, so you can retrieve them if you want them, then start overwriting green and red with presets you like.

You can't overwrite the amber presets by using the MI/MII save button on the amp but you can overwrite them using FUSE.

All of the factory presets are in the on-line library, just do a search and filter by author (Fender).

I don't like the factory presets. They confuse everything by mixing in too many effects. In reality, there's not much there you can't do better, as soon as you start knowing the Mustang and working with Fuse. No, there are no empty preset slots, but you won't miss the factory ones. You can back the whole set up in case you want any later. There's a factory set backup available to download too.

The way I use the Mustang is to set up the 8 amber presets to be purely optimized amp models, with generic effects, like tremolo or chorus and reverb, and set the effect level back to 0. That way I can turn these effects up with the MOD and DLY/REV knobs while playing. These new amber presets then make 8 good virtual amps that I can use as such, with or without outboard gear, and that are easy to tweak at play time. Want a Vox type sound but very saturated? Bring up Amber "British 60s" and turn up the drive.

By optimized I mean using the advanced amp controls, using the gain or compression module in the post-amp slots, getting them to sound ballsy, equalizing the volumes so there is no jump in level when you switch presets. Then finally turning the Drive down so I start with a pretty clean sound with the guitar at say mid-level, and I can push it into more overdrive at play time from the guitar, plus I can raise the drive on the Drive knob - the same idea as with the effects, much as on an analog amp.

That gives me 8 good "amps" ready for a lot of situations, including using with stomp boxes by keeping the drive as-is (pretty clean), and the effects as-is (at 0).

Then I use the Red presets for downloaded ones and experiments and gradually copy the successful ones to the Green bank, trying to stick to the same order. So I know a Marshall type will be in the British 80s slot, basic in Amber, and a fancier one in Green, and the latest experiment in Red.

Just some ideas.

lol... I wasn't the one to ask the question, but I got a lot out of your answer as well, particularly how you approach setting up the clean amps. I've only re-picked up the guitar in the last year, and when I was playing before - way back in the day... think hair metal - I didn't have the money to buy many effects to try sounds, and really learn what they do. I knew the basic concepts of what most effect types did, but there's a difference between knowing the theory, and having really played with something, dialed it in, and knowing that when you turn that knob to "x", what's going to happen sonic-ly.

As far as the presets go, whenever I research a product, I see remarks like "the presets sounded horrible". The thing people forget is that a) not everyone's ears are the same, and b) the manufacturer is intending to show the purchaser what the product CAN do. So presets will tend to NOT be subtle, to make sure that even an unrefined ear can hear what's being intended to demonstrate.

To the OP, I think FernandR's advice is right on the money. Back up the factory presets with FUSE, so if there's a particular effect that you like, and you want to see how it was done, you can reload it. Then get rid of the ones on the amp, and set up clean models. Besides being more usable, it'll help you avoid getting lost in all the Mustang CAN do. It's easy to sit down, intending to work on your sound, and get lost bouncing from preset to preset, playing with all the toys. It's like being in a candy store... hard to focus on what you really want.

Thanks, Darth, glad it was of some use. The 8 amber presets are enough to keep 8 distinct amp types in, and Fender's models are good. The rest is ornamentation, and people get, as you say, distracted. They're led to think say some echo or phasing is a core property of a setup, where the expressive quality of a player's tone can only come from the way the amp model reacts to the player's dynamics. It's what makes electric guitar with a tube amp a soulful instrument, and why the Mustangs are so good. That Princeton model e.g. ACTS so much like a real tube circuit!

And remove unnecessary temptation to get distracted as well. If not genius, at least uncommonly good sense.
