I have a M1 and I have been playing about a year now. I am trying to improve my techniqe with my fingers and also about tone.

Right now I tend to switch amp models or presets when in search of a tone and I am not learning anything about how my playing or how I use gain and tone controls on an amp go towards getting a tone. I am constantly fiddling with the mustang, not to complain its a lot of fun too much infact.

I want to settle down to one or no more than two amp models (not 15 for now) and learn something about tone while I am developing my playing skills. But I cant decide which model.

I have each amp model set up at zero with no effects saved in its own preset, so I can select an amp model and pretty much control that amp from the top plate of the M1.

So which model(s) would you guys recommend to stick with in my situation? Please dont say "the one you like" because I like all of them. But I want one that I can work with to get a good variety of tones using just the tone controls at first and later adding select pedals as I progress in learning electric guitar.
Thanks

If you can call it playing, everything from CCR and Stones to Foo Fighters and Alter Bridge.
Nothing too heavy by todays standards.

If you want to play with only tonestack and gain I would suggest the british 60s as your first learning experience and then maybe british 80's, you can get an amplitude of tones with the knobs on those two and lear a lot about gain and EQ.

What do you think about the British 70s (Marshal Plexi model)?

well, certainly the plexi sound is more interesting than the others, but IMO the gain control is less responsive compared to the JCM800 model and VOX-AC15 model, so maybe for amp control learning purposes is not the best amp model, but again, you are supossed to have fun while doing this so...

I mentioned it on another thread. The Bassman with the 2x12C cab has a great warm, clean tone that can get pretty gritty by cranking up the gain. Very rich sounding.

This is just the kind of feedback I am looking for.

Amen to this! Currently, I'm playing with the Bassman Drive preset more than any other. I love the punch and touch sensitivity, and it responds great to added OD! ( via my own pedals)

I like the '65 Deluxe Reverb model best for clean sounds.

I just experimented with the Bassman for a bit before I packed it in for the night. Listening to some youtube samples now btw. Going to work with it tomorrow.

I spent time with the British 70s, British 60s and the JCM 800 models tonight. I played them with way way more gain than I usually do and they take on a different character that is not just noise -especially the Plexi mod. That sound is really what I am after, but it IS a bit hard to control.

I've read that the volume knob only sets levels relative to each of the presets, but it seems to suck tone too whan I use it to bring the "Plexi" down to something more comfortable. I have the Master vol between 2 and 3 (anything lower the sound wants to cut out I am using Sony studio monitor phones), and it gets a bit fatiguing after not too long.

So is it true that the M1 volume control does not affect tone? or does it?

BTW I was listening to Derek Trucks last night and the way he can break a note into overdrive just by how picks it is something else.

Thanks

This is why I didn't get a modelling amp when I started. I got a simple amp with boost, gain EQ, trem and reverb. That was plenty to be going on with and it's still capable of producing sounds I can't get yet.

But I couldn't play distortion at nighttime volumes with it, so got an M1. Early days, but too much gain, poorly played sounds bad, and will mask basic technique problems. Also modellers aren't always that easy to use - there is an enormous amount of permutations possible between all the models, EQs, and your guitar - you can't use them all. I think it's an amp that can take quite a while to really get what you want from.

I've a feeling I'll find maybe 3-4 models I really like for clean and dirty stuff, and use some spare banks for those + mod and FX.

I'd suggest finding a nice rich sounding model and add enough gain to get breakup when you need it, which you can use your guitar volume to back off when you want to clean it up.

The Bassman suggestion looks a good one.

The Deluxe models- '57 Deluxe, and'65 Deluxe reverb respond well to the gain control also. Cranking those hard will give you that nice Neil Young-esqe "cranked Fender" sound.

Just add the fuzz stompbox for the filthy tone he's so famous for.

Anyhow- if turning down the channel volume cuts your tone, try boosting whatever eq knob fits the situation. If that amp model has a bright switch, make sure it's on, and try adjusting the presence control as well. No need to rattle your brains with too high headphone volume!
