OK, here's a purely hypothetical question, at this point. Has anyone replaced the no-name speaker in a Mustang II? if so, with what and how did it sound after you did it. I currently am playing (strictly hobby and at home) a Mustang I, and really like it, but I can sense the limits of an 8 in. speaker. I really don't need the size or horsepower of a Mustang III, so I was wondering about modding a II with a decent speaker (looking at the Eminence Patriot Cannibis Rex.) I looked in the back of my Mustang I, and saw the three connection wires to the speaker, one hard soldered, two attached to the wiring "wings" on the speaker. I am assuming that the wiring would be the same on the Mustang II, so any ideas on how to wire a Jensen or an Eminence, if I do go ahead with this hair-brained scheme?

Thanks for the info,

Robert Kinsell

Now there is a Pandora's Box, if I ever heard one! I hear about a lot of guitarists swapping out speakers in a lot of different amps, so it shouldn't be a big deal. It would likely void the warranty, though.

FWIW, I'm a bedroom player too. I own the Mustang III, and it works well in that situation. It does do "bedroom volume" well, plus it's got a headphone socket. The extra power simply buys you more headroom, and allows you to use it in other situations, should you ever decide to jam with others. The LCD screen, and expanded user interface alone are WELL worth the cost. You can do so much more without needing to hook up to the computer! Add in that 12" Celestion G12T-100 speaker, and... If you're going to upgrade to a larger cab and speaker, you may as well go the rest of the way and get the fuller featured mustang. With V2 coming out, you'll be able to get a very good deal on a V1.

One of the forum members here - Orcatraz - swapped out the speaker in his MII with a C-Rex with very good results. It reduced the brightness, punched up the mids and since it has a very good sensativity rating (102), it even made the amp louder - he gigs with it.

If you search the forum for his user name or "Cannabis Rex", your sure to find the thread about the mod which includes photos.

I keep thinking about getting a C-Rex my self but the warranty thing haunts me.

btw...

You might also think about modding your MI:

I checked out that link. Trey cool on the Musty mod. I am intrigued and a little bit inspired. I have a Musty1.

I love all of my Mustang II, I gig with it all the time now. I bring the laptop used just for this amp. I record with it take it to festivals that I was invited to play. It is easy to carry. My Vox and bigger fender are just too big and heavy. The only thing I wonder about is the speaker.
Who made it, I work this amp hard and a better speaker might be in the cards.

See this recent topic discussing the same question:

In brief, consensus is that changing the physical speaker in the Mustangs isn't necessary or beneficial. Use the software cab emulations built-in to the amp to change the type of speaker sound the amp creates - that's the whole point of it, it's a configurable modelling amp - you can get lots of different sounds from the software without needing to change different parts. Or if you really want a bigger/different speaker, it's much more cost-effective to replace your Mustang 2 with a Mustang 3, which brings many other benefits too.

A lot of people have given advice about which speaker to replace in the Mustang II for various sounds, but I have a Mustang II with a blown out speaker, which speaker would you guys recommend I buy to replace it with that has the most similar or slightly better sound? Not looking to go crazy, I've seen people recommend these

I have changed speakers in my Mustang 2 V1 a couple of times now and have just swapped out from an Eminance to a Jensen Night Hawk C12-75NH and WOW!! this is the speaker that works. What a differance it's like night and day. No more high shrill from the B and E string from any of my guitars.

I tried 2 speakers. One that the in the blues guy uses and my all time fav speaker that has worked for me in every amp i have owned in the last 25 years, a EV12L. Both ruined the amp's tone. From building tube amp for years i came to realize if you voice an amp with a given speaker, that speaker is likely to sound best with it. Of course it varies due to different tastes, but it is true. And with a modeler i would imagine even more so, much more. However, if i WERE going to try again i think you may be on the right track with the jensen. The reason is this....the one fault i find with the mustang is a lack of the very highest treble frequencies. And the jensens i have tried are loaded with those frequencies. The mustang is thought to be bright by a lot of people, but while that may be somewhat true it's brightness in the lower treble range, but it;s missing that sizzle and bite at the very top. I think the jensen may just bring that and make it a much better amp. But thats just a guess because they ARE bright overall and while they may add that needed sizzle it could also add too much redundant top where the mustang already has it.

Regardless tho, if i had to try another speaker thats what i'd try and hopefully would be able to tame the brightness with settings but retain that sparkle at the very top. Might possibly work great with the 2 cab sims at the very right of the dial, the 1 ans 2x12 cabs which are very dark and came tame a bright model big time.

I'd like to pose a question here. I play a Mustang V head through a line 6 4X12, loaded with lower end celestions, cabinet. One thing I really like is that the amp and the cabinet are 8 ohms.

I'm pretty new to Mustang, and, boy, it makes me feel good about my choice to hear all the good things on this forum.

But, I'm wondering if y'all think I would get a noticeably better sound if I had the Fender cabinet.

The speakers in the Line 6 are "Celestion Customs", which I have read are pretty low end.
Musicians Friend says the Fender 4X12 has "Celestion Rocket 50's". I don't know anything about them, yet.

I did however read something interesting in a review about my Line 6 cabinet, I would also like to know your comments on this:

"Because Line 6 does Amp Modeling the spreakers are designed with a more flat frequency response than other speakers. This allows the Line 6 heads to be able to reproduce the "total package" of the amp it is modeling and leave very little of the sound being produced to the speaker."

If this is more than just clever marketing of their cheaper speakers, I might be okay with the cabinet I have.

I can't comment on what Line 6's marketing position is, I suppose it's a trial and error situaiton.

the cab simulators on the mustangs amp settings (page 2) make a huge difference in the sound of a given preset. it's really something you'd have to play around with.

the line 6, that is a stereo cab right?

the MV cab is, as far as I know.

I'm not sure what the ohms are but 16 vs 8 still should be ok. usually the only time to worry is where you're running a load below 4 ohms.

Yeah, my cab is stereo. As far as ohms go, I hear a lot of conflicting points of view along that line. The most consistent information I've seen in my research is that the speakers' ohms should not be lower than the amp's. However, I know there are people who disagree with that. Some say it affects tube amps differently than SS amps. I've stuck with it as a rule of thumb on all my stacks, and I've either been right or lucky or both. I am, however, studying some basic electronic theory, just to know how it all really works.

As far as the cabinet goes; for now, I'm sticking with the Line 6. That is primarily because I have it, it is in very good condition, and, it all works together. I may change my mind as further information becomes available to me and as I grow more familiar with what my MV can do.

Thanks for the help,

hi,

i've replaced the speaker with a Jensen Nighthawk C 12/75 NH .
This speaker is quite neutral in sound and the amp has so much profit from it.
It sounds great on small volume but even more in high volume.
While the original speaker sounds stressed on high volume, the Jensen can play as loud as you like, so the amp is now stage ready to use.
The modelings still work great.
You have more low end, clear mids and great high end.

A really great improvement and easy to swap. Took 30 minutes to replace the speaker.

I've done it: i had a 8inch yamaha woofer and so i opened the back (the ery hard work was this) and changed the speaker- I didn't widen the circular opening because it seemed superior to my skills but i'll try someday.
IT SOUNDS GREAT!!![img2017-05-16 12.58.14][/img]

I have no idea, what you did or saying. A Mustang 2 has a 12 inch speaker in it so why would you want to widen the circular opening and put an 8 inch speaker in it. What am I or you missing? <g> Also, your image did not make it through.
