I would say the placement of your vox multi effects depend on what you want to accomplish with it.

As a general rule, if you want to use it for overdrive, compression or similar effects, the best place would be between your guitar and the mustang instrument input

if you want to use the vox unit for amp emulation, the best place mught be the mustang effects loop.

As a general rule I would say 90% of the time you would like it more connected to the instrument input, but try and experiment both ways.

Your output on the Vox is stereo, you might be getting poor performance if you are not using a Stereo 1/4" to Two Mono 1/4" wire as stated in the Vox manual:

Connecting a mono cable to the OUTPUT/PHONES jack will only pick up the sound from left channel.

Related to 'strings...' post: the M-IV has two fx-return sockets: stereo, left and right. As far as I can determine, each of these has a separate switch to enable or bypass the fx-loop. So if you only plug into one of the sockets, only that channel will go through the fx loop, and the other channel will still go straight through the amp.

So to use the fx-loop properly on the M-IV, you must have a return signal connected to both the 'left' and 'right' fx-return sockets.
