Hi, im new to this forum and this question has probably been asked before so sorry for a repeat but im a beginner guitarist and purchased a cheap Stagg amp for my very first but I am interested in buying a Mustang amp. Funds are a bit low so which would be more practical and what are the major differences between the Mustang I and the Mustang II?

Thanks for your help :)

what would you like to use your amplifier for? and what's your budget?

The product page describes the major difference:

Which Mustang is for you?

Mustang™ I is a 20-watt amp with an 8" speaker.
Mustang II rocks a little more horsepower-a 40-watt amp with a 12" speaker and a slightly larger cabinet.

Home use really as im still learning. And my budget is between £100-£150. Not sure what that is in dollars but the M I is £99 and the II is £155.

Mr Strings' questions are very pertinent. A few other comments:

- Choice of a Mustang amp is very sensible, you'll get to experience a lot of good sounds for sensible money.

- At this point, it's worth waiting for the "V2" amps which will be available soon (no exact date from Fender, but people are speculating that supplies will be available from retailers in March). They appear to be retailing for the same price as the "V1" amps and you get some extra features.

- Or if you can find a "V1" amp at a reduced price, that could be a great bargain (as you probably won't actually need the few extra features for a long while).

- Mustang 2 has a better speaker than Mustang 1. It's not just that it's higher power and bigger, it has a much better sound. Mustang 1 is a fine piece of kit - but unless you need its small size / portability, I'd suggest stretching to the 2 if you can afford it.

- Mustang 3 (depending on budget [edit - just seen your reply, ok so the M-3 is over-budget, but I'll leave the comment here for completeness and for anyone else reading this]) has the big advantage of an LCD display and better controls on the amp itself for changing settings. You don't need this as a beginner, I mention for completeness. You can still get all the same sounds on the Mustang 2 as on the M-3, but you'll need to connect it to your PC/Mac in order to do so. Some of us find it more convenient to be able to do more on the amp without needing the PC.

Thanks Scott that was very helpful. Size of cabinet isn't really an issue. I saw that the "V2" amps were coming out but as you said I may not need the extra features the "V2" amp has to offer just quite yet. Im chosing a Mustang as it has the different effects and I will find that a bit easier learning songs etc for the tone and effect on which the song is played.

The Mustang series is great for just that, sounds like you're on the right track. If it were me, I'd go for the MII to get a little more power and a better speaker.

The V2 has had some firmware and modeling enhancements that make it worth waiting for depending on the desired amp. Fender supposedly fixed the aliasing (digital fizz) issue.

but for where you are considering a II or a I it wouldn't matter as these didn't have that problem AFAIK.

I would look for a used Mustang III or wait for a new V.2 Mustang I or II. You will eventually tire of the smaller practice amps and want something more substantial like a III or IV anyway.

OR... you can buy a Mustang Floor pedalboard and get all the functionality of the Mustang III and IV plus a wah/vol pedal and plug it into any amp you want including the one you already have. The Mustang Floor just had a $100 (US) retail price-drop and it is a crazy value for the money now!

If you come across a used Fender G-DEC version 3 30 watt... you might want to consider that as well. It is also Fender FUSE compatible and in addition to amp models and effects also gives you backing tracks and rhythms to jam with and a decent little looper.

I tried to verify personally with fender but they would not say if the fizz is corrected or not in V2 amps so I would not be so sure.

wasn't there some guy on the forum that had all the inside info? Contributing to the knowledge base, bringing something of value to the forum, yadda yadda. What was the name, Taskmaster? Assmaster? Something like that....
